I’ve never been able to get PMS (Currently running Version 1.0.0.2261) to automatically detect changes to files added to my NAS which my Mac connects via SMB protocol. Should I switch to AFP or to Windows File Service? Pretty sure I’ve tried those with no luck.
Mac Min 2011 on 10.11.3 El Capitan + Synology DS916+ (DSM 6.0.1-7393 Update 1)

Triggering will work or should work for local files. In most cases it will not work for network shares. Quote from article:

Note: In most cases, this should work for content on local filesystems. It will generally not work for network shares mounted via SMB, NFS, AFP, or similar.
That’s annoying. I saw some crazy Python script to help the problem, but didn’t look like any easy setup.
