My current playlists do not automatically update with new/unwatched TV episodes. I know it is possible; but, the latest post I could find on the subject was from Oct 2017. I’ve checked the web app (Windows), mobile app (Apple) and TV app; and, I do not see “episode view” or any of the filters identified in that post. I’m sure the layout or process has changed since 2017. Or, maybe I’m just missing something. Any help would be appreciated.
The best way to create a smart playlist is to use Plex Web.
At the top of your library you can see an action/control bar:
Basic Filtering
Click the most left dropdown – by default (no filters applied), this will display the text All. There you can pick the Unplayed option. If you want to create a smart playlist or collection, best use the Advanced Filters option
Library display mode
The 2nd dropdown controls how the content of that library is displayed. For a tv-show library, the options are TV Shows, Season, Episodes or Folders. Plex will only add the actual media items to a playlist (for tv show libraries that’s always episodes). With a smart collection, the display mode controls what organization level is used as entry point when opening that collection (e.g. shows, seasons, episodes).
Library order
The 3rd dropdown controls the sort order of the content of that library – this will also be considered when you create a smart playlist… so you can e.g. sort those unwatched episodes by air date, rating, date added…

Thank you for the detailed instructions, tom80H. Everything makes sense. Though, the problem I am having is that I do not see the dropdown menu referenced in your post. I took a screenshot of my home screen. It looks different from yours.

You can only see that for libraries on your Plex Media Server.
From the looks of it, you don’t have libraries of your own – only the online media sources offered by Plex. There you can use the “watchlist” feature within the “Movies & Shows” section but no custom-made or smart playlists.
