Automatic Power Control

With the rising energy prices in Europe I’m interested in developing automatic power management for my Plex server.

Specifically I’m interested in two things; being able to safely auto-shutdown Plex, and the machine running it, after a period of inactivity (I think I already have all I need for this), and also allowing local/remote users to boot the server/Plex when it’s off (this could be me in the other room, or abroad).

I can definitely build my own web-app (running on a low power device of some kind) that would provide a site to turn on the server and boot Plex on command, but what I’d really like is to have the experience be as seemless as possible.

Are there any APIs folks know of in the Plex ecosystem that I could harness to trigger custom code (powering up my server) if a server (which is currently off) is being looked for by a client?

(I have some speculative ideas, but I’ll hold off for now, incase there’s prior art I’ve missed!)
