Thanks for the suggestion but no MAC for me I only have Windows boxes.
Also I think it would be great If Plex had this feature or at least a tool that would allow users to do this with out confusing PMS.
EX: if I use some other application to rename my media files PMS will then see that renamed file as something new and I will have to make sure that it only has the one right entry in the library and not the wrong one that cannot find the old file name.
I understand that there are other tools out there but I can’t be the only one wanting this, can I?
“tinyMediaManager supports you to organize your file structure. You can rename your movie folders / movie files with a given set of tokens which will dynamically use the given metadata for file naming.”

I will check out Filebot but I would really like something that would do all 1000+ movies and tv shows for me in one step
I’ve had no problems with Filebot doing this for me with that amount of files. It also supports quite a few scripting options to automate the process so long as your ripping software can call a script afterwards. I recommend it, saved me a lot of time and effort doing this.
It would have to be renamed before a scan though, I’m not sure on how Plex pics up renamed files, not really messed with it. It did however do fine when I converted a few to different formats. Although I let Plex match the new format first before deleting the old format from Plex.
It would be neat if Plex automatically renamed media files during matching in a library scan. If it recognizes the media file correctly, why not rename it to better match Plex naming conventions? Plex could also put the media files into organized folders, say TV shows, movies or even collections of a movie series. This would all keep the library more organized, better readable for Plex and reduce the time needed to do it manually. Maybe in the future you could just drop a media file into an Plex inbox folder and it would recognize it, rename it, and move it to the appropriate folder in the library. iTunes already does this, and I find it very useful and time saving:

Well, it could be an option that you can toggle and untoggle. The matching services already provide a percentage of how sure they are that it matches, so maybe Plex could only rename it if the percentage is above 95% or so.
But that's definitely a valid concern that you raise.
ok so i need help. I renamed all my files according to the plex naming site but i am running into a problem were its still showing the old file names. I have restarted it , refreshed it, deep scanned it, did a total reinstall of plex with no change can anyone help.

Sorry, this isn't the appropriate thread for this question. Try asking it in this forum: Ask a Ninja!
I personally wouldn't want/use this, as some of my files are part of my itunes library, and I don't want that to get messed up by plex. (For the record, family and kids movies are in itunes, other stuff elsewhere. This way my kids can use AppleTV without the risk of seeing stuff they shouldn't, and the violent/bloody stuff is available for me in plexconnect and PIN protected.)
Scary thought....What if it matches incorrectly?
I prefer to have control here
/T
Then you'd "unmatch" and "fix incorrect match", which would rename correctly.
I really want this feature. It's like just like the option in iTunes to keep your media library organised. At the moment I have to do it manually and it's so much hard work renaming files. FileBot and RenameIT aren't up to scratch and I don't want the hassle of running additional tools.
The argument about a wrong match doesn't make sense. If it's the wrong match it will show the wrong details/cover in Plex and is something you would obviously want to fix ASAP. When you do the file would get renamed correctly. Obviously it should be optional, and probably default to off.

2% mismatch in a movie library => 98% of Plex-users freaking out while searching for the few missing movies hidden behind wrong posters.

What do you mean? What's it got to do with the name of the file on disk? Plex allows you to fix incorrectly matched items, which is going to happen regardless of this feature. Like iTunes it should be an option. I'm OCD about posters and meta data. I'm the same about my file naming. I don't what you have to set both up, once on disk, once in Plex.
I guess it was not meant to be a standard behaviour, but a proposal to hae an option one could tick and untick.
Organised media makes more sense, why skip into plex if not!
So I do vote for this feature, probably it should be implemented at various degree (keep main folder but organise series- or movie names in folder).
By the way, as for now I did it manually but..... hey it's computer age is'nt it?
The point is that plex needs already organized media in order to be capable of matching anything.
Without proper filenames, folderstructure and embedded metadata Plex simply doesn't know what is inside the file.
My source files are good enough to match on, they are just not in a nice consistent format. I like to keep episode names in the file name etc. Doing this all manually is very time consuming. Plex doesn't just use filenames, it's also using the ID tags. It's the same with iTunes, I don't think there's an issue with whether it would work.

To avoid doing this manually you could use some dedicated software. But even then the process would not be 100% automated and free of error.
AFAIK tags are not widely used when it comes to movies. Many users don't even have tags sorted out for their music.
ITunes has a different approach and even uses it's own codecs and taggging-system when storing media.
Plex is not "storing" any of your media. You tell Plex where the media are and Plex just remembers the location and maps the file to a database entry.
Basically the filename is the starting point. By renaming the file you would create an unnecessary loop. Not talking about how Plex should handle different versions, stacked movies, foreign titles etc.
Last but not least: if a movie is matched the wrong way the new file name would also be changed into something wrong. How would you find a movie with was given a wrong title in a large library?
