automatic rename files

Hi there. I just started to manage my library perfectly to plex especially for tv shows. I used filebot to rename all of my files to get the best matching experience, but most of my shows already include the name and some “S01E01” express. Wouldn’t it be nice if there would be an option within Plex after a correct match to click on a button and rename every single data after the tvdb match like filebot and some other renamed did?

like to bring a file named “breaking.bad_S01E01-pilot.AC3.HDRip.x264.FUN-xVid by pahsdbpbsgpb.avi” just to “Breaking Bad S01E01 - Pilot.avi” if all infos already are downloaded from tvdb?

Hi would respectfully have to disagree with this one. Plex’s role is to serve and display the media in the library, and do that well. If you are looking for a renamer, I would recommend looking into tools such as SickBeard that automatically downloads AND renames just as you mentioned. There are also quite a few third party apps that does what you are looking for to existing collections.

As yalla-one said, use SickBeard. Even if you don’t use Sickbeard as a downloader it’s great for manage your Tv series.

Shows you missing episodes, when episodes are showing, rename your files etc.

Just tried SickBeard, conclusion, when he started to rename my files I lost about 2000 show… ^^

read how to use it, then use it - it is brilliant :)

+1 on this. Similar to the "Organize Library" feature in iTunes. I already have hundreds of files in my plex db and would potentially have to relink them if I used an external renaming utility.

oedipus, “all” itunes media has metadata, whereby itunes organizes the content.

plex pulls metadata based on organization, naming. most plex content hasno metadata, by default.

Once Plex has matched the file, it has metadata (external to the file itself). At that point Plex could rename the file and directory per the plex naming guidelines.

Scary, IMHO....What if Plex matches incorrect, and you have a large collection, chances are that you never will locate your movie again

You'd need a button to do the rename. Either at the title level and/or section level.

a MUCH Better renamer is Filebot

a MUCH Better renamer is Filebot

or "theRenamer"

I use both at times... the Renamer does better for badly formated tv and movie titles but filebot seems to support absolute episode numbers...

I did a bunch of research on this the other night to fully automate my Plex server. I found that "TV Rename" worked for managing, formatting and storing all of my traditional tv shows that I auto download. It monitors a folder they go into and then moves them to the correct location with the correct naming convention for Plex to index.

However I had an issue with Anime, even the more popular ones like Naruto. Since these use absolute episode numbers I needed to use Filebot to look up the absolute numbers that download "Naruto Shippuuden - 312" and convert it to the S00E00 format that Plex/TVDB recognizes. Filebot has a great command line interface so i created a quick 1 line script that would take all the files in a folder and fix the formatting.

The was relatively simple to do as i'm not that great with command line. I then setup these commands to run with windows task scheduler so i dont have to kick them off. They constantly look for the new files and will fix / move them as soon as they are downloaded.  I was able to get the whole thing fully automated in only a few hours (including researching different products).

Just to throw a stone at the renaming crew: it's important, if you care about your media collection, to know which releases of a show you have.

Renaming scene names is silly, especially if a better version/format is released or for some reason the files are nuked.

If you take the time to set up all this custom stuff to watch your media on a computer on your tv with a dedicated server blah blah blah it's very inconsistent to be so careless about your files.

Not sure if this has been requested before, I couldn't find anything in the search.

How about Plex renaming files to match what's in your library?

Example:
Showname.s01.e01.2013
To Showname S01E01 - Title

Thoughts?

Edit: autocorrect changed plex to pled :(

IMHO, Don't like it.

What if detection goes bad, then you'll blame Plex for making your file-names into a mess.

Also don't think that's Plex policy to change peoples file-system, and thus why they store everything they do in their own directories.

And also look up stuff like filebot etc

Plex has only READ-ACCESS to my Media. I would not want any automatic action renaming files or amending file properties. One should remain in control

There is nothing wrong with Plex Media Server adding its own data in its own library as it does now - but not to change your filesystem

I know this is really old, but I am hoping for this exact feature.

I would love to have the option to let PMS rename my media to match what it has been matched to in the library, if this needs to be a manual process kicked off by the user then so be it but I my files get misspelled names or weird names given by the Ripping software and I would like to clean it up with out a ton of time to invest.

I will check out Filebot but I would really like something that would do all 1000+ movies and tv shows for me in one step
