Automatically detect 3D movies?

Is there a way to have Plex automatically detect 3D movies? If I have a 3D version and 2D version of a movie it shows up twice in my library (even worse if i have 3D, unrated, theatrical, etc. but that’s a separate issue I am also trying to resolve). Right now I have to manually rename the title to add “3D” to the end for every movie and add a tag so that I can filter 3D movies. I thought Plex would just parse the “SBS”, “OU”, “3D”, etc. from the filename but it doesn’t. I was hoping it would so the player could add a little 3D logo in the corner for me.

No, there is not.

The only app that parses the 3D in filenames is the Plex for Samsung app so it can switch the TV’s 3D mode. Since that is the only app with direct access to the TV’s API’s that is also the only app which can do that.

Ok, well I understand that it doesn’t but the case I am referring to wouldn’t really need to have access to the TV. It would be nice if the library scanner would recognize the file is 3D from parsing the filename so that it can tag it as 3D like it does comedy or drama.

I just keep a separate library for my 3D Movies (since I only have a few dozen).
I also add (manually) a small graphic to each of my Movie Posters, so I know it’s the 3D version:

So, for example:

Takes a bit of extra work, but curating my library is one of the things I like about Plex.
[Still have to tell the projector that it’s a 3D Movie coming down the pipe - mine’s not auto-sensing]

How did you add the graphic? Is that an option somewhere to overlay it or did you just manually edit the poster image file?

@bobbintb That was manually added using a photo editing software. Not a big task since my library of 3D media is kinda small. At first I was going to use a small image of my projector, but then I found the 3D Splash image while doing a Bing search.

So, I know this is a dead thread, but just in case people looking to do something similar to what OP was hoping for, there is a less than perfect way to accomplish this goal, and it’s not entirely automatic, but it’s pretty effective. Basically you sort your library by duplicates, as the 3D version of your media will most likely be merged with the standard item, then split apart the duplicated files and rename the 3D version “Movie: 3D” or whatever your want.

If you’re not sure how to do this:

  1. Sort your library by duplicates

Doing this, if your 3D versions are intermixed and merged with your regular media, will list which items in your library have multiple versions of itself. 3D versions should already be merged with the standard versions.

  1. Click “…” in the lower-right corner of the media artwork, then select “Get Info”

Hopefully you’ve named your file something like “Media Name 3D” or some such thing.

If so…

  1. From that same “…” menu, select “Split Apart”

Now you should have 2 media items that look identical.

  1. Using the same “Get Info” option, verify which of the two is the 3D version, then rename it to set it apart from the original version. You can also adjust the poster to further differentiate the 3D version with the original:

The result should look something like this:

Hopefully this helps!
