Automatically display recorded TV Shows - Seasons - Library Default / Seasons - DVD Order

Hi,

All my recorded TV shows using the Plex DVR default to Seasons -> HIDE

I have to manually edit each TV Show under Edit -> Advanced -> Seasons and change from HIDE to LIBRARY DEFAULT (see below).

Is there a way I can setup my DVR / Library that when a TV show is recorded the library is shown as TV Shows -> Show Name -> Season -> DVD order (ie S01E01, S01E02…etc).

Id like global settings for all my recorded TV Shows to be as per the image below.

Im hoping there maybe a setting I have missed or something I can edit so that I do not have to keep editing each TV show to display the Season as ‘library default’ and ‘DVD order’.

Any help appreciated.

Why do you set DVD order, when Aired Order is more appropriate? You are recording off the air after all.

Because i setup lots of DVR TV show recordings and use Plex to build a library in the DVD format… then i will watch an entire TV series starting S01E01, S01E02 etc. I dont watch episodes as they record or are aired. Unless im missing something?

So is it possible to global set Seasons by LIBRARY DEFAULT or not?

Setting DVD order requires your files to be numbered like they would be on DVD.
Since you are recording them off air, they are numbered (very likely) not that way but use instead the regular ‘Aired’ season and episode numbers.
Some tv shows don’t even have ‘DVD order’ data available on TheTVDB, so you won’t get usable episode information for them.

What are the settings on the ‘Advanced’ tab when you edit the library?

‘Advanced’ tab when editing my TV show library is selected to ‘show seasons’.

I recommend you to set this to “hide for single-season series”.

Ok. Now set this option as per your advice. Il let you know how it goes. Thankyou for the help!

Hi,

So after changing the settings as per your advice & recording a few new TV shows the issue im having is still present. Any new TV show defaults to ‘hide’ and i have to go into each newly recorded TV show, click ‘Advanced’ under options and Seasons as ‘library default’ to get recorded TV shows showing up in Plex under their relevant series…

I have never heard of such a behaviour for new shows.

Is it possible, that you had these tv shows (not necessarily these episodes) previously on this server?
So that this preference is a remnant from before?

What are some of these shows?

Of all the shows I’ve encountered, only one deviated from air - Firefly - and did benefit from the DVD sort. Pretty much all the rest of them come on DVD/BluRay just how they aired (I mean they do make a mistake now and then, but that’s not an “official” DVD Order). Maybe it’s just the shows I watch?

Thanks for the reply.

I recently formatted my entire recorded TV shows HDD & re-installed Plex to the latest version - It made no difference. The TV show library both on my Plex Server and Fire TV boxes just list the seasons as ‘hidden’. I only have to select the new TV show ‘season’ option from ‘hide’ to ‘library default’ once and everything is corrected. Any additional episodes recorded are then stored and displayed correctly. When the shows are initially recorded, Plex is handling & structuring the folder content correctly on my HDD. Im not sure what im doing / got wrong!

ANY new TV shows. So for example i setup TV show ‘Family Guy’ to record all ‘new & repeat episodes’. I had 22 episodes recorded from different series which just came up as a list. When i logged onto Plex server & looked at the ‘advanced’ setting for ‘seasons’ it showed ‘hide’. I then changed this to ‘library default’ and all was corrected. The 22 Family Guy recorded episodes were then listed under their correct series.

Welp - that’s a new one on me… I can’t imagine wanting the library default the DVD order - only about 10% (that’s generous, ain’t it?) even have a DVD Order to Sort To.

Further, if it causes what you got now - I’m pretty sure I want to avoid it.

This won’t delete anything from the internal Plex data folder. The preference about showing or hiding seasons is stored in there, and not in or beside your media files.

Ok thanks.

When TV shows are created and stored in the data folder, how does Plex define those preferences? Based on the global settings from the Plex server interface?

I understand it like this:
Initially they are derived from the global setting in the library properties.
Once they are changed on a per show-basis, they become stored in the properties of the show.

Have you ever checked your main database for damage?
This kinda sounds like such a defect.

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 5 minutes
  6. fetch log files and attach them here

Or inspect them yourself. Take a look at the Plex Media Server.log file and seek for messages about database corrupt or malformed.
If you find these, you may have to repair your database.
