Transcode on Apple TV 4K

I am new to Plex and try to understand the limitation and requirements related to transcoding. I have few Apple TV 4K devices in my home, and they are all on a GB network. Here are few quick questions I have

  1. Technically, which format does Apple TV version of Plex support? I would think this would be a direct play where the plex just pushing the file straight out to the plex player on the apple tv?
  2. Does apple tv work with both h264 and h265?
  3. In what situation would transcoding kicks in on the media server when all my end points are apple TV or Windows 10? (where the media server has to convert the movie versus just direct play)
