AVI files not seen?

Media server does not see my AVI videos?
My media server does not see my avi videos. Do I need to install another codec or plugin?

Also, a bit of the beaten path... but does anyone know of a video application or script (my media server is on SBS 2003 at the moment) that can be run to convert all media files in a folder to another format?

Thanks for your help!
Dan

Hi,

There is nothing additional to be installed, just check how you have them named -> http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/Media_Naming_and_Organization_Guide

Well I am, however the guide link above doesn't work! Under Media Preparation however it says for naming a series based TV show that the file name should be " - sXXeYY - .. I've named it that but Plex refuses to pick up any of the 14 .avi files in the directory, except one, which is horribly misidentifies!

The TV show is Boston Legal and I have 14 episodes which are all .avi files. I'm on Linux (Ubuntu 13.10) if that matters.

Note I can add this as a "Movies" or "Home Movies" and it see all of the .avi files but I cannot add them as "TV Shows".

Help.

Under Settings > Library , Enable the option "Empty trash automatically after every scan" and do a deep scan or 2

I assume you're talking to me. I don't see what this has to do with my problem but I did it anyway. And as I suspected, it did nothing.

Yes it was. Reason I provided that idea is to make sure the database hasn't orphaned the files somewhere unreachable. Of the things that can happen it's often a common fix.

But one question. Do you have a TV show in your library called "The Season" ?

Nope.

Hi

I've also been strugling with this.  I've just solved it - maybe this will help you.

I had many series files in .avi and none were showing.  I went into the folder and edited the folder preferences, I hit "show advanced options" and I changed the scanner from "Plex Movie Scanner" to "Plex Video Files Scanner".

Happiness!

Did you try using a TV Show Library instead of a Movies Library?

No, I didn't try that.  I was trying to avoid having to sort my files (into tv and movies) before being able to see them.  I tend to watch and then archive later.

But thanks for the suggeston!

I archive by active/completed shows myself. I have both folders added to the same TV section so it's all in the same place :)

Just remember that Plex and it's files have a particular way about things. Make sure you always follow the naming convention.

Thanks again for the response!  I'll keep an eye on the naming thing...

I nener tried AVI files for Plex before, but I know H.264 MP4 works, maybe you should try to transcode youe AVI files to MP4 and then stream to plex.

I suspect you missed that this is a really old thread. And that it was solved already. :)

It wasn’t solved already! I don’t see a solution in the previous threads and it’s happening to me too. I’ve tried renaming the files, loading them as tv shows and movies, and it won’t recognize the .avi files either way.

This thread was last responded to four years ago so chances are it was resolved.

However, if you post how you are naming your files exactly and how you have set up your TV Shows and/or Movies libraries, we can most likely get you sorted out

See these documents for help:

I followed this: https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

Example file name: Garth Marenghis Dark Place - S01E01 - Once Upon A Beginning.avi

If you’ve renamed the files after Plex initially scanned them, you’ll need to do the The Plex Dance ™
