Im only posting this for informational purposes. I love Plex and we use it all the time at home. I recently added a *.AVI movie to my collection that will not play on Plex. The error is that my NAS is not powerful enough to convert video. OK fine. All of my other movies play and they are *.MKV or *.MP4. However, I have Emby set up as an alternate and it feeds off of the same NAS DB as Plex. Well, that *.AVI movie plays just fine on Emby. My hesitation to begin using Plex a while back was my perception it was finicky about file types, codecs used, etc. My media collection was somewhat of a mixed bag in terms of file types. Still, I converted everything to *.MP4 or *.MKV to make things easier for Plex, and therefore myself, in the long run. However, I remain a little curious as to why I am not successful in playing some titles on Plex but Emby streams right along. I am glad I have both options up and running. My setup is Synology 918+ NAS and Roku Ultra. When I check my Roku connection I am getting over 60Mbs in speed. The movie plays fine on Emby at home and remotely to my phone. It will do neither on Plex. I can understand a difference in UI and some features but wonder why there are such differences in performance between the two players.
You are right pluxology. AVI is a container and Plex is trying to transcode (convert) its content. It’s an old horror movie I had downloaded for Halloween which now I will just save for next year. My point is that Emby has no problem with it while Plex seems to be finicky about what it will or wont play.
Here is the media info for the movie from both Plex and Emby. Just an older SD movie. AVI container, MPEG4, MP3 audio, etc.
