I am looking for a way to backup my Library and posters so that if I ever have to move to a different server or re setup Plex I don’t have to manually fix all my matches again. I have spent many days getting all my media properly matched up and getting the correct posters for my media.
Are we supposed to be backing up preferences.xml or not? Because in this thread, Move & Backup Plex Media Library in Synology NAS a moderator is explicit about not baking up the file. I want to backup my settings/metadata to a USB drive so I can move it to a new NAS. I will install Plex fresh on there and restore my media to the same location (folder structure wise). Should back up everything in /Library plus preferences.xml and do overwrite everything on the new NAS? Thanks.
Hi, can you clarify what you mean here? Do you mean delete these files/folders on the new machine (after a fresh Plex install) and before copying over the backed up data from the Old Machine? Or do you mean to copy the backup from the Old Machine and delete these folders/files on the new machine before launching Plex?
Hi, I’ve been spending the past 2 days trying to figure this out. I followed all the steps, removed the folders/files after copying, updated ownership, etc but when I go to start Plex on the new system, it gives me an error “failed to run package service”. I tried starting all over on the new machine - uninstalling the package, removing plex share, removing plex user and restarting. Installing Plex fresh allows it to run but again, once I copy over the Library folder, “failed to run package service” when starting Plex.
Any ideas? I really don’t want to lose my metadata/posters.
I was able to get Plex to launch after restoring a backup of a database (about a week old, from the old server). The downside is none of my metadata/posters seem to be applying. I’m just re-scanning all the libraries now from scratch which is really what I could have done from the beginning and saved the hassle (days worth) of this whole Library transfer. I really wish I knew what went wrong and where. Thanks for your help and patience.
