Move & Backup Plex Media Library in Synology NAS

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

Hi,
I am using a Synology DS218+ I am running space issuee, I bought a second drive thinking I can add capacity to my first drive which is is full. Synology suggested me to backup my media and reconfigure synology Volume from SHR Raid to JDOB and then move the backedup data to the drive and add the second drive to same pull. The problem is by doing that I will loose all my Plex Server Data ( Subtitle, cliparts, playlists, settings, etc)

How can I move the media and Plex Server Data and configurations at the same time

Thanks

RS

Thanks; this is very useful . I know how to do that with Windows and MacOS. I don’t know how to do that with Linux or Synology operating system. Can you help ?

Thank you. You instructions makes total sense. But We I opened File Station went to my Plex Folder

/volume1/homes/plex

The folder is totally empty. Many thanks for your quick reponses

It seams that I can not located the Plex Shared Folder on my Synology. There is a Plex Folder/volume1/homes/plex but its empty. Thanks

  1. /volume1/homes/plex is never used. It’s the DSM home directory for user plex. It has 2GB of space (maximum). Ignore it please.

  2. to locate the Plex share in File Station, you must first grant your username permission to see it. (Control Panel - Shared Folders - “Plex” - EDIT - Permissions - grant your username permission.

Million Thanks, I see it now,

I backed and copied my Plex Shared Folder, corrected the drive issue but now I can not find the original folders names/architecture as before on the new drive. I am copying the Media but on a new folder . If I copy the Plex Shared Folder will it restore all settings?

I am following your instructions . My questions was related to where I should move my media, Should I create a new folder and call it Media with R/W permissions. Thanks

I reconnected the library to the new folder. Everything is working. Thanks for the support

Hi trumpy81,

I’m also using a Synology NAS which I just added 2 SSD to and would like to move plex to my now volume2 and keeping my current meta data and thumb nails etc but leave my media on volume1. I would think your instructions above should be similar for my situation.

Thank you for your reply,

By uninstalling plex in step 2 will I not lose the metadata etc and therefore there will be nothing to rename in step 4. I’m not questioning you to be a dick, just trying to understand and not screw things up.

I have stopped plex from running on my synology nas 1019+ and uninstalled it off of volume 1. I have pointed the installer to install on SSD volume 2. It seems to install but I cannot see it installed in file station. Therefore don’t know were put the “/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” backup zip i made. Plex still looks to be on volume 1 and is still working!

Im very sorry…i’m a windows guy and having a hell of a time getting my head around synology and its OS and what is installed and sitting where. Where do I rename volume1/Plex to volume1/PlexOLD… “file station” or within control panel ..“shared folder”. Where are my movies sitting…inside plex is the library folder where all my movies are.

Scott,
Synology’s DiskStation manager (DSM) lets us do anything we want.
The great part is that we can put our media the way we want it.

With regard to Plex, because the NAS can do so much, we’ve assembled a whole bunch of How-To’s & FAQs.

The main FAQ is here:

What will help you in setting up and getting your head around this, I recommend the new setup guide I’m working on.

The fundamentals are, as Trumpy points out,

  1. The “Plex” share is normally hidden and of no interest during normal operation to users. It exists as a place for all the media’s metadata (which can get to be quite a bit).

  2. Create shared folders that you want , which make sense to how you want the media organized. Plex will work with anything.

  3. We’ve found Synology continues to insist on influencing the “video” share and interfere with Plex even when their software (Video Station) isn’t installed. We work around this by simply not using it and creating our own.

Keeping all this in mine, I recommend this type of layout because some design decisions were made about how Plex should operate on Synology systems and I, as the engineer, have written the software to expect

Putting your media in the Plex share, while it may seem logical to you “my movies I want Plex to play”, it isn’t how it was thought out.

We thought of organizing more like “Kids Movies”, “Our Movies”, “Music”, “Cartoons”, “TV Series”, and other nice descriptive names.

In this How-To , which is still a bit of a working document, I go through the first time setup. I’ve been in contact with the YouTube author whose video says to put everything in the Plex share which he now understands is incorrect

To move your media on Synology, it’s as simple as “Drag & Drop” in windows or “Right-Click” → Move-To which you’ll see in the FileStation (equivalent of Explorer)

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help.

Wow…thank you very much. That is awesome. Boy its been a bit of a hair pulling experience up to this point trying to get my head around it.

Your help and input has been greatly appreciated…Thank you very much. My biggest error was putting my media in the wrong place. The warnings “please do not place any media here” i miss understood, thinking it just didn’t want media at that level of the directory.

Scott,
I’m the engineer who puts those messages there.
If you need someone to raise your fist at.

OK Media moved to correct location out of the plex directory … see screen shot.
Plex installed and pointed to volume 2. I would expect to see plex installed there but I don’t. What have I missed?![image|690x431]
