bad video quality

Hi all, recently possessor of a Chromecast 2 to replace my wd tv live, I installed plex media seveur on my pc,
in “streaming quality” there are checked “Direct Play” and “Live Streaming”, and I noticed a significant difference in image quality between the two Chromecast and my old wdtvlive, colors drool and picture not very clear on the Chromecast, comparing the same video file.
where can i watch to fix it?
thank you.

The CC is no replacement for the WDTV.
The WDTV can play much more media formats (codecs) than the CC.
So what happens is probably the Plex server is transcoding the video to h.264, prior to sending it to the CC.
And every transcoding makes the quality worse.
Take a look at the mediainfo of the file.
What video and audio codecs are in there?
What bitrate does the whole file have?

the Codec is MPEG4
and the Bitrate 1032 kbps (until 1900 for some files)
my tv live wdtvlive began to be old, and I thought I could replace by this system.

Yeah, the CC does not play MPEG4 /DIVX/ XVID files. It is pretty restricted.

then what solution to read them properly?
encode the files?
transcode files with Plex?
replace chromecast? (by what?)

I let myself be fooled by the test that says we could read the divx with plex / Chromecast lol

With this option like that, will it be better?
Do I put the temporary repertory?

Only slightly. Try it.
The main issue is, that transcoding happens at all. If you want the best quality, you need a plex client which can play as many different file codecs as possible.

Do I put the temporary repertory?

It doesn’t matter as long as you have enough free space on your C: drive.

ok, thank you OttoKerner
last solution, reencode all my file in h264 (ouch it will be long lol)

You will still have the issue (although not as bad, because Handbrake can take much more time for the encode and therefore can do a better job).
Transcoding=Reencoding means worse quality.

The ideal solution, quality-wise, would be a different playback device. Like the nVidia Shield or maybe an Odroid C2.

Or you keep your WDTV and wire it up with ethernet to your Plex server.

i’ve tried to connect the wdtv to plex server, but it is extremly slow, it’s the 2009 model, and doesn’t take advantage of the beautiful presentation of plex.

thank you for your help

That’s true. And it applies to all DLNA clients.

I ask myself if I have not a problem with plex, taking an mp4 file H264 Codec Bitrate 1 392 kbps AAC Codec directly on the computer, so not through the network if I run directly into pms, it should not be transcoding, and surprise, it’s horrible, I put a screenshot of reading on plex and vLC to compare.
stupid question must install codec packs?
PLEX :

VLC :

So which Plex client did you use to play this file?
Which video bitrate did you set in the Plex client?
Did you activate subtitles?

Please show me the mediainfo XML of this video.

for the screenshot I use PMS
video bitrate is set to original
here the mediainfo xml :

So I think you mean Plex Web, then.
Which web browser are you using?

If it is a recent version of Chrome or Firefox, try toggling
Settings - Web - Player - ‘HTML5 Player’

I hope you are not watching this video via ‘remote desktop’!

yes in plex web in chrome
in firefox it’s well better.
HTML5 player is set.
remote deskop is activated, but the file and pms are on my desktop pc

check the quality settings and that HTML5 checkbox in every web browser separately.
All settings under ‘Web’ are only vaild for the particular web browser where they are made.

the 2 browsers have the same setting :-/

so no big worries finally, I was afraid that sending the same images on the Chromecast and poor image quality could be linked.
because even a mp4 on Chromecast is not very pretty.
However direct play and direct streaming are checked.

i’ve find where is the problem, the catalyst radeon setting was set to home cinema, now set to defaut setting, the picrure is well good lol

Ah, the graphic driver making “improvements”… X_X

thank you for your help, i’ve creat another post to know if I can use an old mac mini has instead
