Battery drain and heat - iOS

Server Version#: 1.41.6.9685
Player Version#: 2025.12.0 (1009)
iPhone 16 Pro Max

There is definitely something causing serious heating of the phone. (iPhone 16 Pro Max) And while it was plugged in to charge it was even worse. The whole phone was hot to the touch.

Just watching a 20 minute show takes like 6% battery

Same here, but especially noticeable with 4K HDR content.

Phone gets hot and lot of battery drain. When I’m playing the same file with Infuse it’s all fine.

I can watch exactly one movie (OK, maybe 1.5) on a 2024 iPad Pro. Kind of insane. Previously 20%.

I think I’d rather not be able to play a movie plex can’t graciously play than play something that drains my battery that much. But maybe it’s not even the video decoding?

Never was an issue on the old app. The new app starts making my phone get so warm I’m concerned it’s going to wreck it.

I love Plex and recently purchased a lifetime pass because I get so much use out of it and want to help with continued development.

I really hope this gets resolved quickly.

Which model iPhone do you have? When does it happen? When you are actively playing something? Does it matter what is playing (specific codec)? While downloading? Navigating around? Just in your pocket?

Also can you please confirm the version number of app you are running.

Just merging these topics about overheating. I know some of y’all already answered some of my questions in my previous post from other topic.

I’m running version 2025.12.0 of the app on an iPhone 11 with iOS 18.4

The overheating problem occurs whenever I’m watching something. Doesn’t seem to be a problem when navigating around the app. From what I can tell, it happens with all files regardless of file format/codec.

I’ve been experiencing the same heating issue on all my devices. iPad Pro 12", iPad Air 11" and my iPhone 15 Pro Max. All running iOS 18.4 and app version 2025.12.0. The old/legacy app never did this on any of my devices

I also greatly miss many of the generally normal standard app controls via the keyboard.

iPhone 15 Pro iOS 18.5. (Beta) and the phone feels like it’s going to burst into flames. Started after installing “new app”. Issue has happened while phone was iOS 18.
Happens when streaming or downloaded content. Most videos I watch are hdr.

Same issue for iPadOS.
After playing 1h 35min battery falls from 80% to 19%
Its an iPad Pro 2024 M4 OS 18.4
Unnable to use it if continues draining like that.
Plex v.2025.12.0

Same issue for iphone 16
IOS 18.4.1
App 2025.13

iPhone 14 Pro
iOS 18.4
Plex Client Version 2025.12.0 (1009)

Heats up when playing video. Doesn’t matter which codec, but not sure.

Same issue for me with overheating iPhone 11 Pro running the latest iOS and Client/Server version. Dangerously warm device when watching any video. It was never like this with the old app.

I usually have my iPhone plugged in and charging when this happens. I haven’t paid attention to any battery drain / usage issues.

Does the Battery settings give any more specific details, % of Battery and time used?

Same issue here on both iPhone 14 Pro Max and IPad Air (M2). Only since new app. Wish I could roll back..

Same here on iPad Pro M4 11”. I started playing one 4k movie and the device got SO hot I stopped playing. Then I noticed the battery had dropped massively while playing. Battery stats stats say Plex app used 48% of battery in 36 minutes of playing. It drains battery crazy fast even when not playing anything! INSANE and 100% unusable. Please bring back the “Plex Classic” app until you fix these problems! You’ve just made my Plex server useless. I’m on Plex app version 2025.14.0 with iPadOS 18.4.1. Never had any battery problems with old app on any device, let alone a brand new iPad M4.

That’s not good. I recently had to delete Weatherzone app as it was eating battery life like there was no tomorrow. Battery life is back to normal, I’m wondering 18.4.1 has something to do with this anomaly. It would not be the first time a quick OS Security update cause issues.

App: 2025.14.0
iPadOS 18.4.1
iPad Pro 11" M4 on LAN

I have just about every major streaming service available running on this iPad with no problem. I can run Netflix, Max, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Peacock and Xfinity Stream with zero issue for several hours without a beat on 18.4.1. But I cannot run the new Plex app for more than 30 minutes without the device melting. I’ve been a paying PlexPass user for longer than I can remember. Today is the day I start investigating Jellyfin. They’re giving me no choice. Plex is literally unusable.

Ok then,
just saying not seeing that issue here.

With Jellyfin you will need to use Infuse apps for Apple Devices. So it might be best to investigate Infuse Pro.
