Benefit of Plex on NAS for local streaming?

Hi,

I have a Synology NAS set up on my network that holds various video, music and photo files.

I regularly use my Sony Bravia android TV (as well as other devices) to watch the films I have stored on the NAS, and I use VLC to do so. This works well, loading the films quickly with no buffering.

Having seen Plex mentioned many times, I thought I would give it a go - mainly to get a better-looking interface to use when browsing my media from the TV.

I’ve set it all up, and I can login on the TV and see all the media - however it is very very slow compared to just using VLC. I assume it is actually using the internet to access the NAS rather than just viewing locally over the home network. Either that or it’s something to do with transcoding?! It is especially bad with 4K films, taking ages to load and then buffering - wheras VLC handles it fine.

So is there a setting to have Plex just utilise the home network, or is it something else causing an issue?! I have no need to access my files remotely via Plex, and only really want it for a better UI.

Any advice appreciated,

Adam
