Best server version for WD My Cloud EX2

Server Version#:1.15.4.994
Player Version#:

I am having frequent problems with the Plex server app 1.15.4.994 crashing on my WD My Cloud EX2 when access it from anything other than a local hard wired machine. If accessing wirelessly or remotely it tends to crash fairly often. I have tried multiple devices with different player versions and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Stopping and restarting the app on the NAS fixes the issue but it is annoying to do frequently and difficult to do remotely.

I was wondering if there was a better Plex server version (maybe an older version?) that plays nicer with the WD My Cloud EX2. I have noticed that the CPU usage tends to run pretty high on the WD My Cloud EX2 while streaming.

Thanks for any help.

Mitch

I have a WD MyCloud which does not have the ability to run Plex directly on it. I only use it to store all my media. I run the server on a laptop which points to the media on the NAS and it runs great. Do you have a device that you can install the server on vs the NAS Itself?

Yes, I have considered that but I would want to use a standalone device so that I don’t expose the personal data on my regular PC to a possible data breach. I do not have a spare machine to use for this purpose at present. I also did not really want to buy one right now. I was really hoping to get my MyCloud working, it works great if I use wired devices on my home network.

Thanks,
Mitch

I am curious, is anyone successfully using Plex server on a WD MyCLoud Ex2?

Mitch

Can get an NVIDIA Shield to run the PMS and just use the WD NAS for storage. I use this setup and works well for me.

NVIDIA Shield TV | 4K HDR Streaming Media Player https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075RXV2VR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pYcwDbVBF9TNZ

I was actually considering that as well.
It makes me wonder if anyone is actually using the WD MyCloud Ex2 as a Plex server or if it was just included as a token feature that doesn’t actually fully work. Since nobody else seems to use it for that functionality.

Mitch

boa tarde. o meu serividor e nas wd mycloud exe2. sim eu usor como servidor plex e acesso, minha blioteca de filmes pelo nas. eu posso compatilhar meu plex cpm vc.

I just bought a NVIDIA Shield Pro and want to access the content on my WD MyCloud Ex2 from the Plex server on the Shield. I have not been able to get it to work. I can’t find any helpful instructions on how to set this up. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Did you setup a shared folder on the MyCloud for the Shield to access?

Mitch

Yes I did. Are there any special features that need to be set for the folder?

I seem to remember that I had to enable media sharing in the share permissions. It has been awhile since I set it up though.

Mitch

I am running PLEX successfully on my WD EX2 Ultra.

But … the hardware does not support transcoding, of course.

However, if you encode your videos as follows:

  • .MP4 container
  • h.264 video format
  • AAC audio format
  • no sub-titles

And no remote access as that will almost always require transcoding.

So for only local home access, it works fine.

Ich habe auch die Mycloud 2exUltra. Bei mir bekomm ich den Server einfach nicht zum laufen.
Hast du nen Tipp

Frrag ich mich auch. Bekomm es einfach nicht zum laufen
