WD MY CLOUD PRO SERIES PR2100 vs NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro Home Media Server

Hello,
I’m planning to get a server for my Plex library. I am not sure if its better to get the WD MY CLOUD PRO SERIES PR2100 or the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro Home Media Server. I was planning to get the My Cloud Pro server but I read here that Nvidia Shield is way better for streaming Plex than the My Cloud Pro option. But I also know that My Cloud Pro just added built-in hardware transcoding just for Plex Media so I am not sure if the My Cloud Pro is enough to run my Plex Media smoothly or should I get the Nvidia Sheild instead? and is possible/better if I can both to work together or is it not necessary?

The answer to your question depends on how you plan to use Plex. I have the PR2100 and it works flawlessly for me. I can have 3 streams going at one time and not have a hiccup at all. I use it for Live TV/DVR and for playback of recorded media to multiple devices, Shield TV, Roku 3, and Fire TV. The PR2100 gives you the ability to upgrade your storage over time as needed, where I believe the Shield comes with 500gb of storage at most (you may be able to plug an external drive into it though). You can set up the PR2100 as a RAID device to make sure you don’t lose your data if a drive goes back.

If you don’t plan on having multiple streams going on at one time or recording a lot media, the Shield will be fine for your use case. It just depends on how you plan to use Plex.

I plan to ripoff the blu-rays of movies and TV shows that I own and just drop everything on Plex and porobably view it on my AppleTV. I was planning for the PR2100 but the more i read about it, the more I hear that it can’t stream Plex. but since you tried it and it works perfectly for you then PR2100 it is. Thank for replying!
