First of all, I love Plex, and I would love to use it for my TV/Radio-recordings!
Now I´ve got a question about livetv-DVR, I’m looking for the best setup, which devices and software I should use.
Here are my current devices:
DS218+ running Plex (with Plex Pass)
DVB-S2 Antenna on my roof
what I want to achieve:
a properly working EPG which can record radio (so I need an EPG which gets the radio guide-information)
an instant converting from .ts to .mkv (not the most important part)
my plan is to get the dvbs2 signal into Plex.
first of all I need to get my Sat-signal converted into IP. This works fine with an Megasat MEG-2000.
The Channel searching works perfectly, it finds about 1200 channels. Plex than finds a few EGP-providers, based on my ZIP code (living in Germany). There is only one which has radio channels, but without any information about the program. So this doesn’t work for recording radio…
I thought to get my XMLTV or the whole “tuner” via TvHeadend, BUT, TvH isn’t running on my DS218+, unfortunately!!!
I posted summit similar to this earlier as I’m going through a similar thing, the biggest hurdle i have came across is the tv guide on plex, if using the browser the tv guide is great but because its still getting rolled out only so certain devices support it an unfortunately i don’t have any connected to my tv’s - so its defo worthwhile checking that your players support the guide before you go any further, ATM its apple tv, android tv or plex web app only that give the actual grid like guide, anything else is the discover mode and it just doesn’t cut the mustard for me.
I am planning to have a script watch a folder that the recordings go to, then let handbrake convert the .ts to .mkv and move it to another folder when done and delete the original just to keep it organized, might also be an option for you as i dont think plex gives any options of saving as other filetypes.
TvHeadend & Kodi has been my saviour so far along with PKC - the separate tv and radio guide is really nice using the Artic Zephyr theme and it all seems to work really well when the menu shortcuts have been changed to plex locations and looks really good, but the downside is the tv guide doesn’t provide the episode & Series info correctly (the TVheadend xmltv seems to outdated and not maintained like it used to be for the uk) so plex doesnt show the recordings due to the poor filenames from the tv guide, Mythtv was another option but an absolute nightmare to get setup.
