In my quest to add streaming services to every TV in my house, I decided to hook up our old Wii to the TV in our playroom (there’s more space to use it in there). I have Wii clients for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Video (although i’m not sure if any of them still work, what with the clients being pretty outdated), but unfortunately there’s no Plex client.
So I was looking for alternatives, and while doing so I softmodded my Wii and installed WiiMC. I’d known about WiiMC for a while since back in my pre-Plex days when I softmodded another Wii and used it to stream .mp4 rips of my movies (made via Handbrake) that I stored on a USB hard drive that I shared on my network via my laptop. (I was such a noob back then…) It’s a really nice media player that supported a decent variety of file types, supports SMB and FTP, and even has DVD player functionality. Unfortunately, when I tried to connect my NAS (which was discoverable on my network already), it wouldn’t work. I’m not sure if I did that wrong, but I’m pretty sure I put everything in right,
My second idea was to use the Wii’s Internet browser and log into Plex Web. That didn’t work either, since the browser was so outdated.
My third idea was to go back to WiiMC and try to set up an FTP server to connect to. I found a TFTP app my NAS supports and set that up. Added the relevant information to WiiMC and… still nothing.
So I’ve come here for advice. If anyone knows how to connect the NAS properly (it’s discoverable as a computer, if that helps) or perhaps someone knows about some amazing fanmade Plex client for Wii i’m unaware of. Or maybe even just some file browser I don’t know about.
Thanks in advance!
