Channel/client for Wii?

I would have thought this was discussed before but I didn’t see it in the list of topics and “nintendo wii” didn’t bring up any relevant results so I figured I’d post the question.

Is there any chance of a Wii client for Plex? We use it on both of our Roku players and would love to have it work on our wii as we’ll be moving to a new home and setting up the wii on another TV in the new place. I think there’s also a HUGE base of potential users as well.

I’m pretty sure Nintendo don’t allow third-party developers to create Wii channels (with the exception of big developers, of course) :frowning:

Actually, they have a WiiWare option for "Indie" developers and while there is a cost associated with it, it might not be too bad, especially if the product is available worldwide. I know I'd pay a few bucks for a Wii Client, (more-so than for an android client at this time as my only other real option is a Media Center PC hooked to my TV or another Roku - both more expensive than a wii client would be.)

since the Wii is reaching the end of its cycle soon enough, I doubt the developers will invest any time in writing an app for it. But once the next gen Wii is out, and it supports 3rd party apps, well, never say never! =)

The Wii has one of the largest Console bases in the world so i would take a stab at a few things.

It is going to be well supported for a while and will have a Huge install base for years to come - People aren't going to just drop the wii for the new one. Sure many will hop on the new console bandwagon but that doesn't mean that the old one will go away. It'll be a relevant console for many years as there are a number of people who use it as their connection to Netflix as well as for gaming.
The development platform will change for the new console but it won't be drastically different. (Like when Apple went from OS9 to OSX) Likely the core development for a Plex client on the Wii will travel from the current platform to the new with some changes being necessary to support new features but, the primary development will have been done, tested, etc... on the old system. This likely puts them a few steps ahead if the next Gen Wii is on their radar.
Being the largest consoles in the world means Huge Distribution which has it's pros and cons. It means Plex has to get it right. The wii has a global distribution that is almost 50% more than either the Xbox360 or PS3 and the Roku isn't even close to those sales numbers. (Wii is at 94+ million units sold.)
The 3DS & Wii (I believe) share a number of things in common (from a programming standpoint) The transition from the wii to the 3DS likely woudn't be a huge development undertaking.
The wii is the perfect platform for the potential for massive distribution. How Easy it is would be another story.

I (briefly) pondered a Wii client since I’ve already got the the hardware and it’d be a nice way to extend Plex functionality. I was considering the home brew approach but quickly realized how far over my head the requisite skills are. It also occurred to me that a client which requires transcoding for all my library content is not really a good match for my home setup. Since the Wii only supports 480P and my library consists primarily of 720-1080P content it seems like a lot of work to learn a new programming language to write a client which I wouldn’t be satisfed to use on the TV that actually has the Wii attached.

That being said, if Plex or a 3rd party developer released a Plex client for Wii, I would happily pay $5 (or the Wii point equivalent) for it

any update on this? I too would pay for the client.

Yeah…I have heard about it from this site…

Anyone?

Hulu Just dropped their client for the Wii on the market. Is this something that the staff at plex could consider? it is the device with one of the largest install bases.

Anyone from plex chime in?

~SB

I doubt it will happen, but I would gladly pay for this app!

just wanted to state my favor for this. Official would be nice and I would gladly pay $5 for it. Homebrew would be ok as well. 480p is ok for most of my shows since a lot of it ripped from DVDs anyway :).

ON Wii Ware they don’t even pay developers until they sell over 6000 units

Also in the BEST CASE connection the Wii only outputs 480p, which has always sucked from the beginning on any larger size HD TV.

I have tried running the Netflix app on it and if you have any other 720p or better device around (PS2, Xbox 360, most blueray players) you can see how horrible the image is in comparison.

Yes, but imagine you have a kids play room with a wii in it connected to an older smaller flat screen? After setting up wii games on an external hard drive, emulators, and Netflix…local content is all that is left and Plex is the final piece for an all-in-one/no-discs geek dad’s solution in that room. Input switching is out of the question. And kids don’t care about 480p.

I couldn't have put it better myself! :D

Having just moved house and being in the process of deploying a new network and new home media solution, I have to keep my costs down, which means making use of as much kit that I already have as possible!

I understand that quality isn't going to be perfect, but I have a Wii (and a PS3 and some VERY old PCs) which could be used to get Plex content to another TV "for now".

Once finances allow, I'll build dedicated client boxes into mini cases that I can attach to the VESA mounts on the back of the TV, complete with HDMI-CEC control etc etc. But right now......

Given the size of the user-base for Wii wentioned above (I have no idea what the size of the Plex user base is, or how many of those have Wii, and of those how many would want this) then I'm guessing there would be at least SOME interest! See it as a challenge! ;)

Another vote for a Wii client please, either official or homebrew. The above posters who complain about 1080p etc. are missing the point. Those of us with kids most likely have a game console set up on at least one tv as its media center, for Netflix etc., in our case a Wii. It will be there for a while. A second box would be neither economical or spouse-freindly. And don’t forget music, analog connection is just fine for that. Thank you!

Here’s another vote for a Wii client, I can watch it fine on my Roku, but my mom would love to watch my more “exotic” videos on the Wii that are currently unplayable (exotic as in h264 and other codecs that the Wii can’t handle on its own).

I guess you guys know that "Play On" has a way for the Wii to receive streaming content. I am fairly new to this home server/streaming thing...I have a Roku and a Wii...and an xBox...trying to figure the one that fits my needs best...right now, the Play On server AND the Plex server are running on my PC.

I’d love to see a Plex Client for Wii!

My Wii is homebrew-ready!

=)

A plex channel for the wii would be great. Thanks for all the hard work so far…plex keeps me from weeping too much that I got a roku instead of apple tv :-/

I had hopes that the new WebClient would work via the Internet Channel on my Wii. Unfortunately, Opera does not play nice with the WebClient code so that’s not a functional option.
