Best way to share content with family member

I installed Plex on a family members iPad and logged in with my username/password. I have PlexPass if that matters. It works fine. I was wondering though if there was a better way to share. Will the app ever ask them for my password? I’d rather not give them my password.

It sounds like if I make them a user they would still need my password (if it ever prompts again).

If I make them a friend and share all my libraries, is there a downside to that? Do they need a PlexPass?

Can they still use sync if they are a friend/user?

Thanks

You should only make Home users for people in your household, whom you trust.

The best thing to do is to have them create their own free account (they do not need a Plex Pass), and share your libraries with them.

Enabling Sync is an option you choose in the Restrictions area.

It might at a later date.

Only if you make them a ‘managed user’. Which you should not do if the person is not living with you in the same household - or if you don’t trust him/her.

They’d have to pay for their mobile apps (one-off payment).
They won’t be needing a Plex Pass.

If you explicitly allow it for them, yes.
Here, the Plex Pass of your server is the determining factor.

They live in my home and I trust them. However, one thing that just occurred to me is if they watch something it will be marked as watched for me too.

I don’t see a “managed” user. It just says “user” in my interface. Is there a difference?

It sounds like making them a friend might be the way to go. Then they can’t change my settings and what they watch won’t affect my watched indicators. The downside seems to be they have to buy the app which is only a few bucks.

That is because you linked their device with your account.

‘Managed user’ = a user you are creating under Settings - User - MyHome
It uses your plex credentials. But every user still has his own watched/unwatched statistic. Switching between the various managed users is secured with a 4-digit PIN number.

They can’t do that either if you don’t tell them your PIN.

I am still confused. On the Plex website is says:

Managed Users have some notable differences from a regular Plex account created on the plex.tv website.
No unique username is required
No email address is required
No password is required

So, does the managed user need my password to login to the app? Does that just mean they don’t have their own password but still need mine?

You are linking their device to your account.
Then you perform the user switching to their ‘Managed user’ sub-account.
If they don’t have your PIN, they cannot switch back to your main-account and thus mess up your watched statistics and settings.

You need to set a PIN first, of course. Here: https://plex.tv/users/edit

Thanks for he help. I made them a friend and shared my libraries and they bought the app and all is good.
