[BETA] New Plex TV Series Scanner

Ah sorry, I looked at the wrong thing earlier.

Your issue is related to the TVDB api bug that’s listed as a known issue. I don’t think they’ve gotten back to us on this yet. I’ll check if there are any updates on this.

You can see that their api doesn’t return dvdSeason for most of the episodes: https://api.thetvdb.com/series/300921/episodes?page=1

Copy, thanks!

I am having issues with the new agent in matching some episodes within a season. An example season would be Looney Tunes, season 1953.

In my server, all episodes past episode 22, Lumber Jack-Rabbit are offset by one as if episode 23 does not exist. All my media is named based off TVDB naming, and I have my agent set for this show to specifically use the Aired episode ordering which is what the seasons in TVDB use on the website.

You can see all the media files are named in accordance with what TVDB shows for that season.

Yet in Plex, it is not fetching anything for episode 31 and everything past episode 22 is incorrectly matched.

not sure where I got the order, but Lumber Jack-Rabbit is S1954E27.
S1953E23 is Zipping Along.
While these don’t exactly match what is in tvdb, PLEX reads them and lists them correctly.

Lumber Jack-Rabbit was originally released as episode 23 of 1953 in a 3D format. They later re-aired it in 1954 as a non-3D version. The one I have is the 3D version and that matches what is listed in TVDB under the Aired section so that is correct.

My issue is that I have this library set to use TVDB for metadata and for the specific show I have selected to use the Aired order so this should be properly matching the episode however it is not.

The change to episode 23 (which is throwing everything else off) was made on Sunday, doesn’t look like our cache has picked up that change yet. Our side should update accordingly when the change is processed.

it is not at all working right to load poster.jpg files into plex. after 100 scans, 10 full scans, 2 times switching to the old scanner (tvdb with local media assets at top) and back i have at max. 20% recognized. wtf!
after the first scan with the new agent plex picked 10 posters out of 300. 10-20 more i could pick myself editing the shows

Does anyone experience issues with cast list not being accurate? My TV Show library is set to use the Plex TV Series scanner and TheTVDB for episode ordering.

First screenshot is from Battlestar Galactica 1978.

Second screen is from TMDB.

The third one is from the TheTVDB.

As you can see none of them match. So where is Plex TV Series scanner agent pulling it’s cast list metadata from?

The pictures line up with TMDB and personally I prefer their pictures because I don’t want cast based pictures, I want “headshots” - particularly for cartoons - that’ll be consistent across content\titles.

I think they use a weighted algorithm maybe with the cast listing order from various sources which is why sometimes it gets weighted for “how popular is this actor” vs “how prominent in this show is this actor”. Lorne Greene is definitely a bigger name actor than Patrick Macnee but since Patrick Macnee is in more episodes - because it’s his voice in the credits - he gets listed first at TMDB. Beyond that weighting at TMDB I’m not sure how they decide next in line because the rest match TMDB order but don’t match IMDB order so… one of the devs will have to weigh in on that one.

At least - that’s how I’ve sorted it out in my head on the logic since the Plex Scanner\Agent does a mix\match of the different sources now for some metadata.

Re cast order on TMDB is actually against their guidelines which state that the cast should be listed in order of how important their character is and not based on appearances or status.

I have come to the same conclusion, that Plex TV Series scanner collects metadata from various sources, and that it’s not very well constructed/put together.

There are other issues as well. Another example of how the metadata is broken when using Plex TV Series scanner is Star Wars: Rebels.

Episode 1 and 2 of Season 3 don’t pull metadata when using TheTVDB DVD order. When switching to TheTVDB Airing order episode 1 and 2 are now one continuous episode which is episode 1 and that pulls the metadata.

Yet more issues are with the naming. In this example note how the first episode of a two part episode is named “Part 1” and the second is named “(2)”. TMDB uses “Part 1” and TheTVDB uses “(2)”.

It’s a mismatch of metadata being put together.

These bugs are only relating to the Plex TV Series scanner. If I switch the library over to use TheTVDB none of these bugs occur.

The DVD order thing is a known issue with the TVDB api. They are aware of the issue but I don’t have an ETA on when that will be fixed. This affects the old Plex TVDB agent too.

The naming of multi part episodes is complicated but we will try and improve that.

@drzoidberg33 I have read that TVDB is doing some bigger changes to their APIs in the coming months. Is this something that is already accounted for with this new Plex TV Series Agent?

Their v4 api wasn’t ready for us when we were building our systems out so we don’t yet support any of those features. We will look to implement some of the improvements once their v4 api is complete and stable.

Thank you @drzoidberg33 for the information. It’s nice knowing what’s happening. I hope that Plex will continue to support TheTVDB. TMDB doesn’t support DVD ordering, but has the option fo uploading season backdrops and season naming if applicable. So the best product is really a combination of both services.

Is the issue with the API the reason why the cast list doesn’t match neither TheTVDB or TMDB?

Any idea when TV local extras will be rolled out across the board for all players? I’m really digging that.

IMDb ratings back soon? I’ve given up on asking about nfo files being read as it’s never going happen lol Also any news or movement on cast at the episode level?

The problem still exist, even after several „plex dance“ actions.

Have you maybe set the language on the show by accident? Edit the show and go to advanced → Metadata language and check.

Hi
Does anybody of you have also the issue that manuel searching for a series with imdb, tvdb or tmdb doesn’t work?
I have series that wasn’t detected so I was trying to find it manually (it’s very very rare that one isn’t found) but I can do what I want, it simply doesn’t get found but I have the series in IMDB, TVDB and TMDB…

Maybe I’m doing somehting wrong as I don’t need it very often?

Thanks for a feedback if I’m the only one or other do have this issue too…
