Better Playlists

Naively, I have spent the past 4 hours organising 700+ movies into Playlists - mainly for the kids (Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, Harry Potter, etc.). I was really chuffed with myself … until I realised that the rest of the family can’t see them. What a complete waste of time.

Sharing playlists is not ‘nice to have’ capability in content management systems, it’s ‘must have’ capability. I would expect nothing less than to share a playlist with a managed user, and even to an external user (via email address).

Please Plex, I am sure “Plex for Pets” and “Plex VR” is important to some - but lets get the core functionality right first.

Thanks.

Why do this when we have collections?

Because I can:

  • select all > add to playlist
  • set items to a particular order within a playlist
  • access my playlists from the Playlists button (without search)

I cannot do this with collections. In my experience, collections are only provided via the search box, or by applying filters. Not that bad on a PC, but on a TV, its painful.

I would much prefer to have 3 menu items on the left; Movies, TV Shows; Playlists. Simples

I think you missed an announcement… https://www.plex.tv/fr/blog/beginning-look-lot-like-collections/

@KarlDag, Thanks, but I am aware of collections, and already have ‘Collections’ enabled on my libraries.

But, I do not want to mess around with filters, toggling between all movies and collections, or applying new filters. Equally, I cannot custom sort collections (and save them in a specific order).

Example: My Star Wars collection places items by release date. Whereas they should be in order of the Star Wars timeline (Ep 1, 2, 3, Rogue, 4, 5, 6, 7, etc.).

I also don’t find the accuracy in which these are automatically ‘collected’ is good enough. To get any real value out of collections, I have add to edit the Collections tag myself.

Like I said, maybe I am old school but, what is wrong with ‘select movies > add to playlist’. It is certainly a lot easier to use on TVs.

I have been a long time proponent of Shared Playlists and really hope they finally add this feature because Plex really needs more curation tools for server owners.

HOWEVER, I will say that for Star Wars movies specifically, there is a workaround that you can use to have them sort in “timeline” order inside a collection. Here’s what mine looks like:

Here’s how I did it: set your sort title for the movies as Star Wars #. So Revenge of the Sith should be Star Wars 3 and A New Hope should be Star Wars 4. e.g.

Then set Rogue One to Star Wars 3.9

@DarkeSword Thanks. I was using the ‘Sort Title’ before, it does work well - but requires adding a value (text). I would probably have stuck with this method if the accuracy of automatically creating the collections was better. But for me, its not quite there. If I were to use collections, I would have to (a) manually add the value to the ‘Collections’ field, and (b) add a custom value to the ‘Sort Title’. Which isn’t as slick as ‘Add to Playlist’.

I will stick with playlists and hope that ‘Share Playlist’ feature is deployed in the not too distant future.

+1 really would like to see this feature added!

+1 Need this feature ASAP!

@uneaqs @“terrence.rose” make sure you hit ‘Like’ on the first post, as this is what Plex use for deciding what’s next on the ‘to do list’

It’s not, though.

Not even Ninja’s knows the road-map, so puzzled about how you know it ?

Pretty easy, the most requested features took years to be introduced (some still haven’t been) while a bunch of other stuff was added that no one had asked for…

This feature should be easy to implement, not that I’m a coder or anything, but having music added to Plex, there should be an easy way to share playlists between users, especially on the same PMS. Using an external script shouldn’t be necessary for a simple feature.

Please add this instead of the VR insanity which is a mystery to me on what planet is that a feature your users want. I am picturing my family … all of us with those creepy VR headsets on … sitting in the living room trying to use Plex. Wandering through the virtual pixelated living room unable find the playlist (as it is under a different user). What a bad joke.

Another vote to please add the ability to share playlists.

I’m sure porn is involved somehow.

Bork,

SwedishJeff

Yeah, I also vote for playlist sharing and then in combination with my Sonos clients.

Why not sharing playlists why does everyone do the work separately? Spotify and Apple Music have also this feature…

this is a simple ehough ‘feature’ you think it wouldn’t need to be requested…yet here we are. +1 for playlist sharing.

This works for Star Wars, James Bond, and Star Trek, but not so much for MCU movies. I still want them sorted in the Movie category correctly. With a playlist I can sort them based on the MCU Timeline, and watch them in order. That’s why Playlist sharing would have an advantage over Collections.

I mean sure. That’s why I said “for Star Wars movies specifically.”

I was really surprised that I couldn’t share my playlist with other family members! Please add this feature.

Please add playlist sharing feature… Plex needs this basic functionality added
