How is this still not possible? Please add playlist sharing and playlist export/import.
+1 for playlist sharing…
With some considerations: how would it work with “smart playlists” based on track ratings? (Aside: I just discovered Smart Playlists and they’re awesome).
Here’s the scenario: Suppose I’ve created a Playlist called “Rush Favorites.” It’s based on a filter where [Artist] = Rush and [Track Rating] > 3.
Now, on my commute each day, I’m systematically plowing through the entire Rush collection and rating each track. Many are painful, but there’s some good stuff in there.
But when I just want to hear some Rush I know I’ll enjoy, I hop over to the “Rush Favorites” playlist and throw it on random and it automatically includes any new tracks I’ve rated above a 3, even after the playlist was first created. (Smart Playlists for the win!)
All’s good so far.
Now I have a teenage daughter who, for reasons that escape me, wants to listen to Rush songs I’d recommend on her phone. She’s got the Plex app and is a member of our Plex home. Seems like a perfect setup for… wait for it… Playlist sharing!
But how would it work?
I assume track ratings are tied to specific users. So just because I’ve rated a track a “5,” she may think it’s a 3. Should she be able to change my ratings and in turn change what’s in my smart playlist? I would think not. It’s my playlist to manage, she should just have access to listen. She can create her own playlist with different ratings if she wants.
Additionally, content rating exclusions should be accounted for too. Rush is probably a bad example, but suppose there was explicit content in there that I’d filtered out when sharing my library with her. I would assume the shared playlist would have to honor setup as well.
Anyway, hope this helps. Just wanted to illustrate how this would be useful for our family!
+1 would love to see the feature available. thank you.
If Plex were open source, this feature would have been done (literally) years ago.
+1 Would also love this feature.
I’ve put so much work into making playlists and it’s a shame I can’t share them with my friends.
+1 please make this happen and like someone said already music is important as music is life to some!
I think its crazy you cant share playlists between users on the same server - please add this as a priority thanks!
+1 for this.
Why is this still not a thing?
(Insert witty comment here) +1 for this request.
I have been patiently waiting for this to become a feature. Hopefully in the near future.
Everyone: Please “Like” the first post to vote for this request if you haven’t already.
This request gets about a post a day. It has to be getting close to the top of requested features, as long as everyone is voting for it.
Naively, I have spent the past 4 hours organising 700+ movies into Playlists - mainly for the kids (Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, Harry Potter, etc.). I was really chuffed with myself … until I realised that the rest of the family can’t see them. What a complete waste of time.
Sharing playlists is not ‘nice to have’ capability in content management systems, it’s ‘must have’ capability. I would expect nothing less than to share a playlist with a managed user, and even to an external user (via email address).
Please Plex, I am sure “Plex for Pets” and “Plex VR” is important to some - but lets get the core functionality right first.
Thanks.
Thanks, this does help. But things to note with the WebTools Playlist work around:
- Rather than sharing the master source (my playlist), it is copying it to each managed user. This means any subsequent changes will also need to be copied across to each managed user, as and when my playlists are updated.
- A couple of my managed users are my children. WebTools doesn’t respect the content ratings of the files (restrictions), and still copies the item to their playlist - but artwork is blank and causes a ‘shaka1001’ network error when played.
I am hoping that the real solution to sharing playlists will be just that. The playlist is created once, it is shared - and any subsequent updates are automatically reflected with shared users - whilst respecting the content rating/restriction model.
Either way - thanks for your help.
Correct, it’s a work around, but AFAIK the only one so far
And adding…
If WebTools was to check each individual item in a playlist, and validate against allowed contents rating for each user, it would be very slow during a copy/import

Why do this when we have collections?

Why do this when we have collections?
Because I can:
- select all > add to playlist
- set items to a particular order within a playlist
- access my playlists from the Playlists button (without search)
I cannot do this with collections. In my experience, collections are only provided via the search box, or by applying filters. Not that bad on a PC, but on a TV, its painful.
I would much prefer to have 3 menu items on the left; Movies, TV Shows; Playlists. Simples ![]()
