Until there’s a custom tag system implemented, many people organize their movies thematically through playlists (“Star Wars”, “Star Trek”, “Harry Potter” etc.). Unfortunately, playlists are bound to 1 user account only and there is no way to share them with other users or at least make them just public on your PMS. So other users can see them when they search for “Star Wars” etc.
When we just could tag all “Star Wars” movies, so they show up when searching for the term, this would not be an issue. But since this is not possible and there’s no sign of Plex implementing anything to group and/or tag movies thematically, the public/shared playlist thing could be a fast workaround. And it would be useful anyway.
Would also like this so that I can share my music playlists with other users on my server…
Yes, this is a very big item that is missing; please try to include it in a future release.
Hate to tell you guys…
This request makes too much sense…
That is why Plex will probably never do it.
Check out this link.
This request for sharing playlists is coming up on it’s 3rd anniversary… LOL
Ah, sorry, didn’t notice this other topic. Else I wouldn’t have kind of duplicated it.
For me, any feature that would allow tagging or grouping movies in a serverwide context (not in user account context) would be great. Or just implement a search index for all the tags. Right now there is nothing to give media a custom information in a serverwide context included in searching. That would be my actual feature request, tho it’s of course a bit ambiguous.
It would be so much easier if “Playlist Sharing” were implemented. Which, sadly, it’s not…
Rather than making a new post in the General (Pass) forum, you could add your vote to the existing Feature Request in that forum by adding a “Like” to the first post of the thread that @jjrjr1 has already pointed you to. Please, don’t just add a “+1” or some other inane number to the thread. These don’t count towards the votes, and just highlight that people don’t read forum rules. Add a vote by adding a “Like” so you aren’t wasting your time. Access to this forum is a Pass only,. so if you are a Free user, you can’t get in to add a vote.
Along with sharing playlists, there are two Feature Requests for “Collections” that could also tie into this request rather well. So please add your support for them here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/81160/movie-collections/p1 and here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/152418/popular-collection-overhaul-ideas/p1 (I’m a bit more partial to the later, as the OP has a really good set of mock ups, but voting for both seems to be what a lot of people have done.) (Same rules apply for access to these feature requests as the one @jjrjr1 linked to earlier. Plex Pass access only.)
Keep in mind, Plex DOES support the Collections tag, but doesn’t do anything meaningful with it. It doesn’t use the tag as most of the competition does.

Actually, collections and playlists could be exactly the same (maybe except for serverwide visibility). I don’t see much difference between the two.

Yes, I missed those but have voted for them now. Thanks for pointing them out.

Yes, I know there are collections, but they are private (account based). Which makes them quite useless for grouping media in a serverwide organizational context.
I think Collections are a global tag. I just logged in to a secondary account I have for testing, and the collections I made for my libraries with my main account are displayed for that account, too. The second account is only used for testing and has never created any of the collections displayed.
The problem is, collections don’t really do much, other than an added filtering mechanism. OTOH, if the second request I sent you to were working as the mockups have it, there are so many other things that could be done with it, including manipulating playlists, to some extent. (Use collections for music playlists for example?) There are a bunch of possibilities for this, but only if we actually had Collections fully supported, instead of some lame thing we have now.

So it would be possible to create a collection that is visible for all of my users and show up in their searches if applicable? I never could get this to work, so I’d be very interested in how you were able to achieve it.
Nothing special to it… I just made the collections in my main account. And then logged into a test account I have tied to a different email address. The collections are there, in the filters. (Go into any view of any library, then click on “options” which should really be called filters. Then click New Filter and collections should be one o the choices shown there.)
You just can’t get to it easily, as it’s a few clicks in. and for the life of me, I can’t figure out how to get to them on my TV’s app (Or a Roku.) without losing even more hair than I have already.
This seems to work best in the Web App, because, remember, Collections are supported, “just not the full range of features one might want”. (This will be a reoccurring theme when I talk about collections, as it’s a quote from @elan regarding a discussion in another thread.)
Thank you very much for the explanation. That’s indeed much too difficult and impractical for most of my users. I was thinking of collections/playlists that automatically show up when searching for a term that applies to them. Which they (playlists) already do when they have been created in the same user account.
+1 on play lists.
Playlist Limitations Engender Xerophthalmia
Interested for sharing music playlists !
+1, yes please, very useful
PLEEEEEASE my parents are computer illiterate. My dad likes Godzilla and bond. On my playlist they’re all nice and in order and would love to share that.
+1 for shareable playlists. Or tell us where/how they are stored so we can extract and duplicate ourselves at the least. Collections dont cut it, need to keep tracks or videos in order of the list.
A thousand times yes! I have so many curated collections/playlists that my friends would love to have access too. Just the other day my friend asked me which superhero movies are from DC and which are from Marvel comics? I already spent time creating DC and Marvel collections, would be great if my friends could see these along with the many other collections and playlists I have created for Christmas movies, Star Wars movies, Star Trek movies, Harrison Ford movies, Hard to understand movies, Nerdy science movies, time travel movies, etc etc etc.
As stated by many other users, would love to have the option of sharing playlists. Whether it’s for my nieces and nephews, my parents, or friends, it’s easier to highlight content. When your collection of music exceeds 10,000 songs; and movies exceeds 600, navigating through these large libraries is overwhelming for many on my friends lists. I know what content I have but most on my friends list don’t. Would be nice to have a shareable playlist of 10 items of content (e.g. that we discussed at dinner or over drinks), they click on the Playlist area, and boom the list is there. No searching, etc.
