Better Playlists

Bump… Let’s get this in. It’s something I’ve wanted since first installing my plex server

Wow, why are people not understanding this: YOU MUST VOTE!!!

Comments are NOT votes. There are 341 comments…and only 61 VOTES for this feature. You wonder why they don’t care… they see everyone bitching and asking for this…yet they also see that people are too ignorant to cast a vote…so why care about what people can’t figure out. UGH!!!

You MUST scroll to the very top of this thread and you MUST click on VOTE on the top left side under the number of votes you see. ONLY THEN does your opinion mean anything.

Yes please

Can you not just make a “Collection” that has your custom movies listed in it?

Because this is also a discussion about why this feature deserves my vote. There is nothing that I can understand “Playlists” can do that “Collections” can’t accomplish.

Commenting. Not voting.

PLEX does more than movies. It also does Music and TV shows. How do you do a Collection of specific tracks from your music library? How do you create a collection for specific episodes of TV shows? You don’t. You make a playlist.

Playlists and Collections are different things. Collections are just used to group Movies, TV Shows (full series, not seasons or episodes) and Albums (not tracks). Playlists are not for grouping. Playlists are, as previously mentioned, for defining a play order for SPECIFIC pieces of media (episodes and tracks). You can’t add episodes or tracks to Collections in PLEX.

Voted!!!

Please people vote on the top of this page in the top left corner!!!

+1 for sharing playlists capability

+1 Just an update.
4 years since this request was created with many users voting for it …

+1 Need this added.

you’re wrong buddy. this discussion is 4 years old, with around 400 votes on it before this new forum + voting mechanism was released - which destroyed every vote before… Plex-Style

Actually this request has around 500+ votes overall

I am NOT wrong, since my post is ONLY about THIS CURRENT VOTING SYSTEM!!! In which, at the time I posted, there were exactly 341 COMMENTS and ONLY 61 votes. Yet people, even after my post, keep ONLY commenting with a +1. Thus, I am 100% correct. People need to READ that typing a comment with +1 does absolutely NOTHING for the topic. Over 500 votes? Really? Cause I can read and I am looking at the vote count as of my typing this reply to your ignorant statement. The current vote count is 158. Why? Because people don’t know how to follow instructions.

That said, I know there were many 100’s of people wanting this feature. My other posts about it stated that I was seeing more than 10 people a week asking for it via my email notices on the OLD system. And even then, people didn’t know how to vote properly. It stated, very clearly, that you had to LIKE the original post (post #1) for your vote/want to count. And yet, there were less than 200 likes on that post and many 100’s of +1’s in the comments. So, at least some people have learned how to read and see that you MUST scroll to the top of this thread, and click on the VOTE button. Otherwise, your vote means nothing. This isn’t brain surgery, but then again, neither are paper ballots that you push out a ‘chad’ on… We see how that worked… Then again, even in that case, 99% of the people had no problem with it and 1% couldn’t figure it out.

looking at my set top box I see Plex Media Server and if Playlist could be saved as a Folder it would be visible. Why is this Feature still not avaialble?

Edit, I think I made it work.
Add Library, create new Library Name (I made Arrowverse) then use custom filter, add the folders containing the shows, change to episode view, add column … air date, sort episodes oldest to newest click apply, go back to Library on left side in server and refresh all metadata so the air dates are refreshed. I’m just waiting on the refresh metadata part but I am hopeful this has worked.
Edit2,
It didn’t seem to work for me, they show up but only in folder order on my device not episode air date. I have a recently viewed option but it only shows 70 titles newest first.
Edit3,
I’m close but all options I have for viewing the library do not include view oldest episodes first and I can’t resort the order. I can select Folder view and the playlist shows up but it’s in Newest to Oldest and a bit scattered maybe I need to let it index a little longer. Might make a coffee. If it indexes by episode air date I can scroll to the bottom of the list and play the last item I think my device will play in the reverse order then.
Anyway it’s looking hopeful, I might try to make a Folder on my server and manually throw these episodes into one Folder in the order I require using a batch file rename app.
Edit4,
This is my work around, still in progress but now I am confident it will work
I used Advanced File Renamer to include the Air Dated before the Episode title
https://www.advancedrenamer.com/download
in the renaming method list I included
TVShow Year, TVShow Month, TVShow Day, TVShow Title, TVShow Season, TVShow EpisodeNumber, TVShow EpisodeTitle.
Then used the import method in the menu bar to use TVMaze.com to find the Show Info selected the required Seasons. Adding only the files I wanted meaning I did not include any .jpg files just movie files to rename and double checked the number of files matched up with the Seasons and checked they were in the correct order before doing the batch rename.
Doing this for each title serperately I renamed Arrow, Constantine, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow , Supergirl, The Flash by fetching the info from the TVMaze.com which is part of the Advanced File Renamer software for fetching the metadata.
I then copied ALL the episodes into one folder DC Comics Marathon which most would rename to Arrowverse. I am now going to add this to the Plex Library by adding the one Folder DC Comics Marathon this should give me a playlist that can be shared because it is now a Library Folder and not an actual playlist and by renaming each title to include the Air Date first they are sorting by name in the folder using the Air Date order and actually including the crossover order.
So if you want to make a playlist you could add this Air Date Title change to your selected titles and put them into one folder for your playlist then add it to the Plex Library. I’m still renaming and updating files but confident this will now become a playlist in the order I want to share it.

If the titles in your playlist are not these ones you could still use the Advanced File Renamer add a method to include your own custom playlist numbers in front of the titles. It’s tedious but effective.

GOT IT
When adding to Library I added as Other Video’s not TV Shows still used the sorting method above in Edit4, only thing I notice missing now in this folder is the actual movie data because of the name change for the files.

I’m about tired of the wait for this. I don’t consider it a feature, but more of a bug, because it “should be” a basic component. But hey, we’ve got live TV/DVR, VR, News, podcasts, and new UI’s that seem to be generally hated (I don’t mind them, but they were completely unnecessary). Is Plex trying to chase off those who came to Plex to manage “our” media?

Just to add to your edit about WebTools there is also my playlist_manager.py that can also share Playlists. Along with this project. So while Plex may not have added this functionality community members have. Might be helpful to add this to your OP but thats your call.

I’m amazed this isn’t a standard feature. I created a huge playlist of all the MCU TV and Movies in chronological order. I went to share the playlist fully expecting it to be there and when I failed to find it I found this thread as to why.

But, hey! I have Tidal now… which no one seemed to ask for. News, because apparently there’s not enough methods to gather news on the internet. And WebShows… which maybe some time when I have nothing better to do I might check out. Sometime after I figure out WebTools and its playlist sharing.

+1, used to use spotify for shared work playlists. Would like to use plex for this now.

Add me to the growing list that really wants to share playlists.
