Better Playlists

Why are we still waiting on this simple feature

I don’t think it’s as simple as we think it is. I have a feeling that there would be an issue occurring when one user shares a playlist that another user does not have access to a third user’s server to view specific items.

It really isn’t a hard to do thing, though. just have a message that apologizes for the inability to access the content.

I use playlists for a few simple things:

  • To properly order show episodes when the air date and the “correct” date differ (as in Firefly and The Tick). Also included in this category is to show when the specials of a show (as in Doctor Who) appear, when the specials are part of the storyline and not just entities unto their own.
  • To effectively recreate the IMDB list of favorite actors in a watchable list.
  • To show “watch” orders in shows and movies that have multiple distinct parts in my library (as in Buffyverse, MCU, Arrowverse, etc.).
  • Rules created playlists for quick access to my favorite music.

In many of these cases (if not all), my users would probably benefit from having access to my playlists. I have, in fact, manually recreated several huge lists for my son (Doctor Who and MCU) since there is no way to simply share the list. And as the lists modify (shows put out new episodes), I either need to modify both lists or surrender one of the lists to being out of date. Now that my brother is also enjoying my media, it would be awesome not to have to manually recreate the lists AGAIN. I’d settle for a back end copy and paste method if I had to, but some sort of share (similar to library share) would be spectacular.

Not gonna lie, your Star Wars Art collection is amazing. Do you have a link for it?

Sure wish I could share playlists…

Voted, I spent so much time making fantastic MP3 playlists assuming all my users would be able to see them as well only to find this wasn’t the case. Very disappointing.

This would be a great feature.

Just did an online search for how to setup this feature and can’t believe it isn’t part of the application. The fact this request was submitted in 2014 is pretty ridiculous. I’m trying to share a Playlist for my parents, but I would have to login to their acount and recreate the playlist of 20 titles that I created in my account.

Plex team, please assign a few devs to knock this one off the list. I would think a relatively easy feature like this would be considered low hanging fruit.

Hi All, there is a workaround for this: tag each SONG you want to group into a playlist with a MOOD.

You can keep all the same mood tags you already have, but by adding an extra tag to each song you’d like to group together in a playlist, your friends and users will be able to search by the specific mood and in essence, you have a shareable playlist.

+1 for sharing playlists with other managed users. As a media sharing platform it’s crazy to think that this isn’t a standard feature. I put a lot of hard work into managing my music playlists - without this feature my massive music collection is useless for sharing with other server users.

When will we be getting this basic feature?

Hi all

I whole hardheartedly agree with everyone who have been posting about this feature for the last 3+ years.

One additional thing to consider when working on this feature, add a checkbox or button for every user profile to enable or disable global play lists.

It is crazy to create the same play list for every individual user at this present time as it takes forever especially if you are as meticulous as I am when creating movies and tv shows where they cross over and intertwine with each other.

I would like to believe that the overwhelming interest for this feature should have sparked some kind of debate among the developers of the Plex platform.

I know there are probably much more pressing issues the dev team is currently working on however please consider all the comments, requests and pleas for this very important and high demand feature.

One additional thing that would be great is an export and import function to export and import playlist(s) either as a single profile import/export or multi-user import/export function.

Thanks for the consideration of this added feature.

Please add ability I have to send people screenshots of my marvel playlist order since many people watch them in different ways. It would be much easier to share it with people that are my friends.

I am sure this is an outdated post but the upgraded WebTools and Unsuported App Store has the feature to send playlists to anyone and everyone on my plex friend list. The only things it can’t currently do is recognize and replace playlists with the same name. So every time I update the marvel playlist my friends end up with a new marvel playlist. It also doesn’t automatically update the playlists for users. It seems that this is a viable feature at this time. Users could have a tab just like shows, movies, etc… for server playlists.

Is it worse it crying, begging for this feature?
Pleeeeeeese! give us shared playlist!!!
and don’t wait another 5 years…

OMG it is 5 years+ since it was posted and this was in a forum previous to that? =O

Guys I have to tell you I was thinking on buying the plex pass but you guys have an amazing and admirable capacity to ignore users

that is something right there! (Y) Wow.

And about the feature. I think it looks really essential (at least more than most of the features I’ve seen you have tried in plex over the years) and even when the specifics may look really complicated (because of the rules, logic and stuff behind that has to carry), you can easily come up with a simple temporal solution for this and then look for the complete one.

Just a suggestion in case that is what is holding you up :S

Without an ex/import feature creating a library with many comprehensive Playlists is a risk (losing it all)!

Losing a complete library isn’t a problem since it’s all songs are tagged and organised (only need to wait for a scan to complete)
Losing a playlist is a big problem since most of the work is in creating them. (many hour) it’s impossible to recreate them in a moment!

I can’t sell Plex to my family without giving them ability to restore their playlist, they prefer iTunes for now!
