Better support for albums and tracks with multiple artists

I’d settle for the ALBUM ARTIST tag over-riding the “Various Artists” grouping that Plex keeps doing. I can’t go through and fix my library any more, it’s too exhausting.

I look forward to this Features since the beginning of using Plex for my Music Collection of CDs and special Tracks. I am now at a point of around 65,000 Tracks in my Music Collection, and there are many Tracks or Albums with more than One Artist. At the moment i sort it in for one Artist only and the Track itself handels a String with all of them. All the ID3 Tags are correctly set, so when the update comes, i am prepared. Inconnectionwith Plexamp Plex works absolutely great, especially since the Sonicaly update! It show me music i have, that even doesnt exists in the web, because they are recordings of my own Band Music and friends.

I think it is working now?! The same search from above now shows multiple results, including some that were not shown before

correction: it still doesn’t work…

the automatic lumping of “matched” various artist records regardless of the ALBUM ARTIST tag is killing me.

Please devs, this is a bare-minimum necessity for classical music!

Just an example for Daddy Yankee
When I search for Daddy Yankee in Plex, I got 4 artists. This should be 1 artists.
When I want to use the Artist Mix Builder in PlexAmp I have to add Daddy Yankee 5 times.

I really need this, my ‘artists’ section right now is cluttered

I can‘t believe that doesn‘t react on this topic for years. :-/
My music collection is cluttered heavily. I have tested Roon for a while now. Iis absolutely brilliant and marvelous how Roon handles multiple artist.
So, please, implement the use of this multiple artist tags — they are absolute basic for managing music libraries.

They fiiiinnnnaaaalllllyyyyy implemented Editions for movies, despite music being the most obvious candidate for Editions. You think they care at all about music? They are barely better than Youtube Music’s local libraries. They still have yet to incorporate keyboard navigation. If I type “Sto” then I better be hovering around Stone Temple Pilots.

I thought maybe I had some config wrong, until I realized this is just a poor database structure. When looking at Miranda Lambert on Spotify, every album she was a part of shows up in the Discography, but when those same albums are in Plex, I only see her albums under her Artist page. I should be able to see every album she was on. She is solo, a part of Pistol Annies then did an album with Jack Ingram, but all these others don’t show up on Plex.

I’m hoping that after 7 years we will finally have the ability to have more than one artist per track after the Actor fix where plex can now search a movie and tv show at the same time. Perhaps some resources can be dedicated to be able to handle two or more artists per track.

When you see how long this feature request has been around - and it still hasn’t been implemented…
I’m currently trying out the trial version of Roon and am absolutely happy how great it is implemented there. I’m seriously thinking about switching.

I think that there are two issues at the core:

  1. Plex is unwilling to devote resources to fix their database for music, which was never setup correctly and kind of a hack just to say plex has music for a MVP to pitch to investors.

  2. Plex is living in the past - I think that Plex doesn’t understand how there is a new business model for artists that completely bypass labels: youtube collabs. These bands correctly give credit to those who assisted. Hell, below is a screenshot from Spotify where a little Phoenix band (Halocene) got huge and is now touring in Europe.

I can click any of the artists in the track and it takes me to their page. It blows my mind that Plex completely ignores this feature. Especially how plexamp headless is finally getting some love (still a long way to go - unusable if one doesn’t have a pi4).

Edit: grammar

I’m baffled that this hasn’t been sorted yet, especially since the matching process uses data from somewhere that very obviously assumes multiple artists are present and accounted for. Please fix this!

Does anyone know what site it’s getting the info from ?

I believe there are a few depending on your settings. The main ones are:

  • Last.fm
  • Plex Community (we all know how bad this CAN be)
  • Local Media Assets (the information within the metatags on your drives)
  • Audible (for audio books)

You think this is bad? It’s been 7 years since we’ve asked Plex to add a delete button, and apart from 1 employee chiming in to ridicule the idea, it’s never been addressed again. If you think they’re overhauling the music backend any time soon, you’re kidding yourself.

Still nothing from Plex, inc. Do we need LTT to do another video for Plex, inc to acknowledge this problem?

Another bump - would also be a value ad for plexamp due to me trying to figure out what is the “master” artist on collab tracks.

I’m so surprised this is still an issue. I understand it’s something they don’t see as a big deal compared to what work would be required because it’s just not how they do their database, but I simply disagree. Multiple artists being on one track is a typical thing, that countless other music players can account for. This is literally what made me switch from using Plexamp to Jellyfin for music. Every few months I check out to see if they’ve made any changes to this because I’d honestly love to just have my music, movies, and show all on the same app and use Plexamp while at work and driving for my music.
