Beyond Frustrated

Server Version#: 1.43.3.10768
Player Version#: ATV & PS5

So PMS was updated a few hours ago. I know it’s been a little bit since the last update. With each & every update I have hope that we’ll get steady playback on the ATV’s. But each and every time it’s failure after failure.

We start to watch something, playback is great. Then … blam-O!!! Stuttering of playback, but now with this recent update. The audio keeps on playing without any issues and the video freezes for about 3-5 seconds & then catches up. This is beyond frustrating, especially now since “Plex” is jacking up the price for a lifetime membership. I mean how can you justify that without having a stable player for the ATV.

Now I try a little something different. I play the same file on our PS5 and it’s buttery smooth. No issues whatsoever. So we know that’s it’s not the PMS version, the hardware it’s hosted on, or the file. Additionally I connect my PS5 to another network, not a vlan. So I’m playing the file as an outside connection. I can verify by the iP’s being reported in the PMS log & Tautulli. So when playing the files externally & on a PS5 no issue. However on my local network on an ATV issues every time.

So when can we expect someone at Plex to finally address this issue once and for all. You’re constantly pushing update for iOS devices, but not nearly enough for the ATV. Is Plex dropping support for ATV? Cause it seems that way, if so then make it public so we all know.

You tagged the Apple TV preview app as well. Are you testing the current one (2026.12.0)?

I’m running (2026.12.0 1783) & version 8.45 9684 on several ATV [4K]. Whatever the current PS5 version is.

That’s the version I’m running as well, on a first generation Apple TV 4K. I don’t see the behavior you’ve describe (I use it nearly every day). I wonder if you might be running into thermal issues. In the preview you can turn on “nerd stats.” One of the things shown is the thermal status (along with dropped frames).

Hmmmm interesting, I’ll enable that & check it out. I also have the ATV wall mounted so it very well ventilated. But it’s still worth checking out.

You could be hitting this, mine definitely does- Plex 4K HDR Stuttering on AppleTV is Thermal Throttling - #89 by MrTemple

Insane that it still isn’t fixed in the production app

Have you tried connecting the ATV to the same network as the PS5? There may be something on your local lan causing the issue.

@pshanew so I started looking at the nerd stats and it’s crazy and funny.

A file that plays fine with no issue at all still displays Thermal Stats: serious. I touch the ATV and it’s barely warm to the touch.

Now when I run a file that causes the stuttering, Thermal Stats: serious but I do see that my A/V Sync is all over the place. It jumps from -2.0 to 3.1 constantly. If I then try this file on the PS5, no issues whatsoever.

ATV is Device, Model 14,1. Device is hardwired, so it’s not a wireless bandwidth issue. Same file plays fine on all of our iOS devices [iPhones & iPads]. So @MovieFan it’s not a network issue. It’s just that the PS5 is on a complete different connection. It’s on my failover network, so when I test I choose this as a way to test. So basically I’m pumping out of my main network going out for my PS5 to download/play the file.

So, yeah even with the latest Server update Version 1.43.3.10768. I’m still running into this. So I’m going back to my original statement, Has the tvOS side been forgotten? Since everything else is constantly getting updates and patches. That work!!!
