Plex "micro stuttering" on Apple TV

I’ve been having a really weird problem for ages in that Plex is what I can only describe as "micro stuttering when playing content. The vast majority of my media is H.265 1080p or 4k and it happens on all content. The ATV has a wired connection with speeds around 500Mbps.

I don’t have this problem on any other streamers in the house, just the ATV in the lounge. Does anyone know what could be causing this and how to resolve? All of my media is stored on a Sinology DS920+

Unfortunately, it has been happening since version 8.18 of the Apple TV app.

That’s annoying! Is there any way to install 8.17 back onto the ATV?

Not that I know of.

For a time someone who had access to the beta builds with the TestFlight app could install the older 8.17 version, but that old build is now unavailable since it expired in June.

So right now we’re stuck with stuttering playback when using the Plex Apple TV app I’m afraid…

I assume it’s something Plex are working to address??! I’m invested in the Apple ecosystem so I’m going to need to look at alternative like Jellyfin. Such a shame, I’ve been a Plex user for years.

You would assume so considering the serious and blocking nature of this issue, but take a look at the replies from previous and current Plex employees in the thread I linked above and try to make sense of the situation. I personally can’t and kind of stopped trying.

I’m still using a Plex server, but for watching videos I’m using Infuse on all my devices now. Not by choice, Infuse is very good but I would rather use the more feature-rich Plex app, but unfortunately it’s the only way if I want to watch videos now.

An other option would be to completely drop Plex, but I want to keep it for the music side of it (an area where Plex is really good in my opinion) and I don’t want to run two different server products at the same time right now.
