Black bars on the sides of non high def movies

All of a sudden my ps4 puts black bars on the sides of standard def movies. It does not do that running plex off my Mac mini. Now these are not the letterbox bars on top and bottom but new things on the left and right that it was not doing before. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am having the same problem on PS3 with anamorphic rips. Basically all of my DVD rips (anything less than 720p) is not displaying correctly just within the last few days/weeks (not sure). Oddly, if I play the same file through the DLNA PS3 path it displays correctly. I’ve tried re-ripping using strict and loose anamorphic settings (handbrake) to no positive effect. Not sure if this coincided with a PS app update but it’s the only place I’m seeing the problem.

FWIW, I have the same issue. PLEX and PS3 Media Server via DNLA are fine. DVD rips are pillar-boxed. I think this started on 12/23 and was fine before.

If your videos are not encoded with a 16:9 ASR (Even in 640 x 360 SD), you WILL see black bars on both sides of your videos. This is called letterboxing & is the very basics of definition video these days

Nothing Plex can do about that (But you can make them into widescreen by using a converter like this one - koyotesoft.com/video-software/free-video-converter.html

Hope this helps

Cheers & Happy Holidays

I have the same issue! And I know that the issue is new! It allready worked fine, but since 4-5 days I have the problem. I think it’s the last plex server update.
