Block TV-MA for child account, except 1 show

I have 2 shared accounts with access to my libraries (my kids). I have all the movie and TV show ratings accurate and allow them both age appropriate access to the libraries/media as expected based on ratings. My oldest has more access (allowed TV-14 and PG-13) and I want her to have access to a single TV-MA show but I cannot figure out how to allow that.

I tried to use a label and allow that access, but it still blocked all TV-MA shows including the labeled one. I don’t want to remove the rating because then the younger account will have access. I can’t find an easy solution that doesn’t involve creating new users or rearranging libraries or twisting the accurate ratings.

Essentially I want everything to stay the same except for her to have access to a single show with a restricted rating. Any thoughts?

I could be wrong, but can’t you share specific shows or movies? You might be able to just share that particular show with her account.

Sadly I don’t have access to my server from work to verify if that’s a thing.

Preparation: Edit the single show in question (on its highest level – not on the season, nor episode level) and assign it a “sharing label”.

Now, go here: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/plex-home
Click on the user name of your oldest.
Now, on the Restrictions tab

  1. ensure an age group (i.e. a “Restriction Profile”) is NOT assigned to that user. If there is, set it to “None”, then Save Changes. Then leave this screen, and re-enter it. You will notice that there are now additional selectors for Movies, Shows, and Music.
  2. Edit each media category and insert all allowed age ratings into “Allow Only Ratings”
  3. Click on Shows and insert the name of the Sharing Label from above into “Allow Only Labels”

You now better perform Switch User on your kid’s Plex clients back and forth between different user accounts. This ensures that the client is fetching the freshly edited access permissions.

Perfect! My issue was leaving the TV-MA rating in the Exclude Ratings list thinking it would block all the MA stuff and let the Label play. So the answer for me is to just populate the Allow Only with everything BUT TV-MA and put the Label on the show(s) I want to let through. And this will now be what I do with movies as well.
