Brand New Shield - Cannot set up external drive or downloads from other LAN Plex Server

Brand new Shield Pro purchased for my son - I did a the basic Shield configuration and at first, just installed Plex. Connected the unit to my LAN windows-based Plex server with my own Plex Pass admin account… Shield populates and works fine.

Problem 1: I could not find the download movie function on the Shield. Is this not available for Shield?

So thinking maybe Plex Server has to be installed, I went back and installed that. I have a 4TB USB3 drive configured as “Removable Storage.”

Problem 2: I cannot see the Shield Plex Server “Storage Location” settings shown here:
Moving server data storage location on NVIDIA SHIELD | Plex Support

Question: Is the only way of creating media folders is via an SMB connection with a PC? I cannot find away to create local media folders. I’ve read this:
Setting Up and Managing Plex Media Server on NVIDIA SHIELD | Plex Support

…which implies that default folders are automatically created. But when I click on Movies, Plex tells me “no media” and to go to app.plex.tv to transfer media. When I did that, the Shield paths are all set to /storage/… - which is the Shield’s internal storage. Seem like I have to configure Storage Locations to use the external storage for Plex in “Problem2” above.

Any idea on why that menu is missing?

I have now uninstalled and reinstalled Plex Server. No option during installation to set storage location and no option afterwards to change it in Plex Settings.

So if it is used to work as per in the links above, it no longer does today.

IMHO: Android Shield must be the single most popular player out there. This should just work.

You cannot use Plex Downloads on the Shield client.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/downloads-overview/

Downloads are not for content duplication from one server to another. Plex is not and does not want to be a file sharing tool. For obvious reasons.

Fine… no Downloads. Reasons are not completely obvious, since you can stream and downloads are available on Android mobile and pretty well every other OS… but OK.

Any thoughts on why Plex Server storage locations are not working?

If you poke around this forum a bit you’ll learn that this bug has been around forever. Solutions vary and they’re all hit and miss. Most recently I’ve seen some people on this forum have luck getting that menu option to reappear by enabling and disabling a pin on their plex account. All turning the pin on or off does for me is add or subtract the “Plex Media Server” heading in the location you’re talking about.

Here’s my personal strategy for dealing with this bug:

  1. Uninstall and reinstall the media server and player app a bunch of times (usually 2-6 times) untill eventually the setting reappears in the app (if that worked you < 10 mins to complete the rest of the steps).
  2. Immediately choose a storage location for your server database (this will be last opportunity to do so without without going back to step #1 so choose wisely).
  3. Go to the web app and quickly adjust all the server settings that require a server restart to take affect.
  4. Go back to the player app to double check everything and restart your server.
  5. “Oh crap! The menu option disappeared again?!?” or maybe… “Wait, did i put the database on this drive or that drive??? I cant remember.” and throw something against the wall.
  6. Repeat steps #1-5 five or six more times and BOOM, problem solved (hopefully). Good luck!

Well KevDroid7316 - I do appreciate you giving me the bad news. At least I know its not me…

I did a complete uninstall reinstall a THRID time… and each takes 10-15 minutes by the time I have to do the dual authentication thing on another machine… and every time I do I have an additional authorized device in my Plex account… all for the same device. No luck.

Wow… what a disaster the whole Plex Shield experience is. It seems like anytime I try some in Plex its a computer science hobby/experiment. Crap software IMHO… when I uninstall Plex Server, it should remove references to it everywhere - including on my Plex account.
