Buffering Issue

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone can help with my problem.

I am running my PMS on a computer upstairs which has an Intel i7 3.4ghz processor and watching Plex on xbox 360 downstairs via wireless internet connection. I have Virgin Media upto 50mb broadband which I believe is upto 2mb upload speed. I have opened the 32400 port on the router. Speed tests with Ookla have confirmed I get upload speeds of around 2.5 mbs on average

Sometimes, not all the time, when trying to play certain .mkv movies via the Plex app on xbox 360 at 720p (1.5 - 3mb), I get buffering every 30 seconds or so. The files are between 3-8 gbs in size, depending on the movie, but same result with all of them. I would have thought an i7 3.4ghz processor would be more than sufficient for transcoding.

What factors could be affecting this buffering and how can I solve this? Plz note, this doesn't happen all the time, but not sure why it happens when it does happen, the internet is not used for anything else at the time. I am relatively new to Plex and have been noticing this buffering now and again but is still quite annoying when it does happen!

Many thanks in advance!

tried a wired connection, wireless = streaming problems

Check the log files and look for the lines with speed in them. If they are greater than 1 then it isn’t PMS causing the buffering. Try moving your Xbox somewhere with a wired connection and play the same file and see if the buffering stops. If it does then it’s likely the wireless.

FYI - Broadbsnd speeds shouldn’t have anything to do with using Plex in your house. It will only use your internal network. The broadband only come in if you are streaming to a device outside of your local network.
