I have Plex on Ipad/Iphone/Windows PC and it all works pretty much seamlessly, i have however now got the plex app for the xbox 360 and i have a problem, it seems that it will ‘buffer’ periodically (spinning circle), this does not happen on the other devices (even when my server is serving multiple streams to multiple devices), the 360 is on a gigabit connection to the server, are there any issues like this being reported at all? This happens on small/med/large files and does not matter on which setting i have the quality set to, default is 720p. If i switch the setting upto 1080 it will then be ok, if i start media on 1080p and this occurs i will set it back to 720 and again the issue is most of the time resolved. Strange. Sometimes changing the quality does nothing and a restart of the app can work. Sometimes it happens and i get the spinning circle for up to 30 seconds, it will continue to play for < 5 seconds and again spinning circle for up to 30 seconds. This is only occurring on the Xbox 360 - all other devices/apps work as intended.
The app however it excellent and i can see a lot of potential. This is not a moan more of a 2 way feedback post

Thanks,
Look at the transcoding thread and the discussion I'm having with Milan (one of the plex support). It sounds like you have a similar issue.
thanks i made a post, not sure its a transcoding issue though for me, its an odd one, almost like it needs its steam resetting once the issue occurs :(

That's the odd thing though, I've no idea what the transcoder process is doing. It "shouldn't" be transcoding because Plex thinks it's direct play in the activity log. It's sounds like a bug to me and who knows how it's manifesting and what impact it's having..
Fixed my issue I ‘think’, first I updated to 9.11 but buffering still occurred, I have now switched on flow control on my network adapter on my plex server and no more buffering…so far that is, not sure if that helps anyone though

you should look at Task Manager (presuming you're running on Windows?) on your Plex server when you're playing a movie from XBox 360, and see if a Plex Transcoder process is running...i bet it is. I turned on flow control, no change, Transcoder process still activates despite Plex indicating Direct Play, and significant buffering issues occur. This does not happen when I watch movies via XBox System Video Player via DLNA protocol.

I could have written that exact sentence. This is what I've been trying to get the devs to look at it in the transcoding thread, but they've just gone radio silent on me.

you are correct, i am getting the same issue, although not very often and only with certain mkv (as its a container i dont know and cba getting the actual info for the media with the problem), for me my server was serving the data to fast, to which flow control resolved. I do still have the issue you described though but generally its alot better for me - although not perfect :(
I was playing around last night while watching a program with the wife, it started to buffer so i logged into my server on another device and the cpu was at 95>%, i found the PlexNewTranscoder.exe was the culprit (as you mentioned), i killed this task which had no effect on the video playing (it still played), however the this exe kept coming back and maxing out the cpu again :(
Seems its still a beta product that we have had to pay for

you are also correct - the media i get this buffering issue on (flow control stuff removed) is showing as direct play....
I have the all the same exact symptoms. Buffering for me seems to kick in somewhere between 60 and 80 minutes.
DirectPlay is enabled
Processor is pegged with PlexNewTranscoder (or equivalent) process.
Plex Server 9.11.n
will purge the cache, and see if that helps.
dont think it will help m8 :( as far as i/we can tell its a bug, that plex transcoder should not be running :( im gonna hold off for an update to the app i think :(
So are people still having this issue? Because I am. A couple of weeks ago it was working fine then there was an update and now it buffers like every ten to thirty seconds. I have messed with all kinds of setting both on the server and the adapter. The Xbox 360 is connected through a gigabit switch to the server.
Running Version 0.9.12.19 on Ubuntu 15. Movie is transcoding, but CPU is only around 20%. PlexPy says it is transcoding at around 3-4x - so it’s not that.
If I play a buffering movie via DNLA it works (but the MP4 transcode makes it look horrible). Seems more bandwidth - however when playing over DNLA (or from a laptop next to xbox360) I can get 1-2mbps (10mbit) easily yet the Xbox is struggling with 100kbps (0.1mbit).
