Buffering on a 200 Mbps tested connection

Server Version#: Plex Web Version 4.96.2
Player Version#: 9.12.2.xxxxx

Hi, I was hoping you guys would know why I continually get buffering on my Plex app on my firestick 4k. I have it connecting to a top of the line gaming machine that is always unused while we watch plex. Yesterday we purchased a Nighthawk router to try to stop the issue but it still keeps occurring. Here is an image of the bandwidth dashboard from the plex web app. As you can see, it’s dropping to almost zero every once in awhile.

Both the plex server computer and the firestick are getting over 200 Mbps, so I have to assume my LAN performance should be even better.

Any advice is appreciated.

TIA

Streaming on its own isn’t a linear thing. The client will request packages of the media file as needed to keep a sufficient buffer size. Therefore the graph is perfectly in line with what to expect when streaming a video.

If you see the video buffering, you better take a look at the now-playing tile of the server’s dashboard to pinpoint what’s going on. Specifically look at how the media is streaming (local, remote or indirect – though your graph implies the connection is considered to be local) and if there’s any transcoding going on.

I suppose your 200 Mbps connection is referring to the internet download speed?
That information doesn’t have much meaning when it comes to your actual network connection. It’ll be more helpful to know if all your devices are using a wired connection or if there’s wireless connections involved. While wireless connections are usually great, they’re easily disrupted by various interferences (distance, walls, furniture, neighboring networks…).
