Hello. I have two Samsung TV’s, both 4k, exhibiting different behaviors while streaming the same file. Here is my setup:
- Nice big 65" Samsung Q7F QLED TV (QN65Q7FAMFXZA) from late 2017 in the living room, connected to living room Nest Wifi Point.
- Smaller 40" Samsung UN40MU7000FXZA in my office, connected to office Nest Wifi Router (via WiFi), that I use as my PC monitor.
- PC running an i7-4770k, 32GB of DDR3 memory and NVidia RTX 2070 Super GPU that acts as my day to day machine, gaming machine, Premier Pro editing machine, Plex media server, etc. It has a 1TB NVMe (Samsung 970 EVO Plus), 500GB SSD (Samsung 850 EVO but starting to fail) and 2x 6TB WD’s. I generally have no issues with it or playing even the latest games on highest or really high settings. The CPU is older but still working quite well.
- I do have Synology DS216j but I don’t use it for Plex. It has the same 2x 6TB WD’s in it as the PC. I use it only for file redundancy and internet sharing certain car shows with some friends.
Anyhow…when streaming 720/1080p shows, etc. it seems to be fine but when streaming 4k, things get hairy. On the 65", it is constantly buffering and I see my CPU/RAM on my PC go to the max and stay there. However, on my 40", streaming the same 4K file, it’s smooth and CPU/RAM are fine with no buffering.
The file in question that I’m using to test is a Planet Earth II episode. Plex states that the file is: 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR).
Any ideas on what is going on and why my nice big TV struggles with it so badly? Here is the XML for the file in question:
