Hi everyone,
I recently started having some really weird issues that I cannot narrow down past what I’ve already gathered. I started noticing a lot of buffering when playing my Plex media and started to look into the problem.
I assumed the issue was my server, but my other users don’t have any problems, and when I connect to a different network outside of my home network the buffering issues disappear. I played around with several settings on both my home network and Plex. When direct playing 1080P we run into issues, but with 720p transcoding it loads like a dream.
My home network is 923/42 according to today’s recent Speedtest so I don’t believe it’s my internet. The server is outside of my home and has a 1Gbps/1Gbps connection and speed tests confirm that. For testing sake I downloaded Emby and can play 1080p video completely normal with no issues from the same server and same devices which struggle to play using Plex direct play. I can stop the issue from occurring on Plex if I connect to the IP and port and login there. Everything then starts playing like it does on Emby or how it use to.
I did check to confirm that nothing is blocking Plex.tv on my router (UniFi Dream Machine) or my DNS server (a Pi-Hole). I went ahead and disabled the Pi-Hole and the issues still occur.
I’m honestly at a loss because it plays fine on a different network and on different people’s devices outside of my home. It also plays fine using Emby or direct IP inside of my home. As soon as I use Plex.tv or a Plex app the buffering starts and I must transcode it down. I get the error “your connection to the server is not fast enough” but I know that’s not the case as it plays normally when direct connecting IP wise.
