Buffering with direct play when remote

Server Version#: 1.18.3.2156
Mac Mini 6,2 (Server Model)
SSD 1 TB hard drive
16 GB RAM
Media is on an external 8 bay enclosure connected via USB 3, WD Red HDs
Network is a stable 200-250 Mbps down, 35-40 up
Issue: Repeated buffering remotely, no problems locally

Hi - thanks for having a look.

As of a few weeks ago my family have been complaining about buffering issues that make playback near impossible. Today I tested by playing a relatively lightweight 4 Mbps movie (mp4) that would be typical of the media they consume and did encounter the issue myself (while monitoring the server dashboard): audio drops and video playback staggers to a pause while the stream buffers. The issue seems to occur every few minutes. Sometimes playback resumes automatically, other times it requires existing to the info screen and resuming playback. Nothing has changed on my end - hardware, configuration, network, etc. I also do not permit video transcoding so CPU burden is not a factor.

I don’t have much experience reviewing logs, but I did notice some unexpected network traffic between Plex and my IKEA Sonos SYMFONISK speakers, so I disabled local network discovery (GDM) but unfortunately that did not help the buffering issues and they still appear within logs (NetworkServiceBrowser). I’ve had them before the problem emerged, so I don’t think they are relevant.

I did also add 0.0.0.0/0 to the list of “Local” networks after seeing other users post successes with this approach.

Beyond this I’m lost…

Seriously, any help is appreciated. My server is unusable remotely at this point.
