Buffering

Hey Otto,

Not sure if this is appropriate, but wanted to give it a shot. Thanks so much for helping with the server item…that’s pain a pain for us and those we share the server with for over a year!

Second, we continue to experience some pretty significant buffering on movies. The process I’m following is ripping the movie with Makemkv and then compressing with HandBreak to roughly 3g files. Our home network is 450mb download and 12 mb upload consistently. Trying to figure out…how can we get the roku and Xbox One to stop buffering on movies…it’s not all the time, but happens pretty consistently. Any thoughts or advice or things I can check?

Thanks so much in advance!!

Post the Plex XML info of an item which buffers.

Do also tell if your clients are connected wired or wireless.
And if you are using subtitles or not.

I’m not sure how to send the XML info…i tried sharing the source. We are usually streaming on Xbox One or Roku Sticks…we use an Orbi router system that pings 450-470mbps download and 12mbps upload. I believe the two parties we share with are using wifi as well, but connection might not be as fast as our home network. Also, no subtitles.

Don’t, it contains your Token, which is as good as your password.

Copy & paste should work. Or you download the XML and zip it. Then you can attach it here.

What kind of CPU do you have in your server?

image

OK, this CPU should be able to handle a transcode.

As you can see in the XML, the real bandwidth requirement of this file is much higher than what you have available as upload on your internet connection.
The only solution is therefore to restrict the bandwidth and force the server to transcode.

If the two users are streaming concurrently, they have to share the bandwidth, so the quality will drop further down.

Settings - Server - Remote Access
Internet Upload speed = 11
Limit remote stream bitrate = 10

Thanks so much for the help! I’ve changed the settings to the suggested speeds.
