Bug: Android TV (Bravia and Shield) Plex app is causing casting notifications when playing content

So this is something that just started in the past few hours. I tried to watch a movie on my TV using the TV’s app, no casting involved at all, and immediately noticed a notification on my phone that my living room TV is casting. Everyone in the house is getting the same notification. I’ve double-checked my device settings in the Google Home app, and there is no option for “Let others control your cast media” like there is for my Home mini. What’s even stranger is that I was watching Plex earlier this evening and this didn’t happen.

I’ve looked at my app’s settings and don’t see anything there at all that would indicate a way to stop this. Some Googling has shown that this has been an issue before, but it’s odd that this would start happening out of the blue. The only thing I can think of is if the Android TV app was recently updated and this is a bug.

I’ve tested this on my 2015 Nvidia Shield, and I’m getting the same result.

Thoughts and/or suggestions?

That is a system notification. on Android 10 mobile it is in Settings>Google>Device Connections>Cast Media Controls. https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/7206638?hl=en

Not sure why it would think the regular Android TV app is playing back via casting unless someones device with the mobile Plex app installed is connected to the app maybe.

I know how to turn it off on each individual device, but that’s putting on a band-aid instead of fixing the problem. What I don’t know is why it just started happening a few hours ago. Literally nothing has changed on my phone, my family’s phones, my TV, or my NVIDIA Shield.

A friend of mine just tested his Shield, and it’s doing the same thing. He doesn’t have the Google Home app at all on any of his devices, so that’s ruled out.

For what it’s worth, I’m not getting the notification when playing content on my phone’s Android app.

Te only notification setting for the app is in the shields app settings where you can uninstall apps, clear cache and such for individual apps.

Started happening to me as well. I have plex running on a Shield and the notification is there even tho playback is stopped in Plex. The notification is there on my phone when Plex is running, no matter the playback state. If I exit Plex on the Shield, the notification disappears.

You need to turn off the setting I mentioned above. The same thing will happen with youtube when it is on.

The same thing will happen with youtube when it is on.

See, that’s the thing. As I mentioned earlier, Plex is the only app doing this.

Alright…I’m now starting to think that Google is changing stuff on the back end. My daughter has been watching a movie for the past hour on Disney+, and the notification just popped up 5 minutes ago. I tested Disney+, YouTube, Spotify, etc. yesterday and Plex at the time was the only app creating the notification. Sorry for the false alarm.

=Edit=
And now I’m not getting a notification, at least when using my Shield.

Google is aware of it.
