[BUG] Auto Adjust Broken

After the recent updates (unsure if Client or Server end), Auto adjust is completely broken, and doesn’t work at all.

Can someone please confirm if they are able to see Auto Adjust occur on the fly when required? I can no longer see any attempt made to auto adjust streams anymore.

Here is my current scenario.

Client/Servers
Client 1 = iOS version 4.16.1
Client 2 = Android version 6.4.1.1644
Server = Ubuntu version 1.8.1.4139

Settings
Clients (These have been set to remove any chance of Direct Play occuring, so Auto Adjust should always work)

  • Auto Adjust ON
  • Internet Streaming Maximum Quality, Play Smaller Videos OFF
  • Home Streaming Maximum Quality, Use Recommended Settings OFF

Server Settings

  • No limitation placed on streaming quality or upload bandwidth

INTERNET AVAILABILITY
Speedtest conducted between server and client : 5mbps from Server to Client.

SCENARIO
Step 1: Client 1 plays 720p file 4mbps. Plex streams at 720p transcode. Plays OK
Step 2: Client 2 then plays 720p file 4mbps. Plex streams at 720p transcode. Buffers

Client 1 then buffers. Plex remains attempting to stream at 720p transcode on both clients while both streams completely pause.

No attempt is made to reduce quality on either client.

Is someone able to replicate this issue on their end?

Here are the logs.

Attempted to play 127 Hours just before I grabbed these logs. 1080P 15mbps stream buffered on a 5mbps internet connection.

Automatically Adjust turned on, all settings adjusted to disable direct play.

Playback buffers immediately- no attempt to adjust quality or resolution.

I believe this may be a server issue- before I updated to the latest PMS on Ubuntu, I didn’t have these issues.

Here are some updated logs with no other concurrent streams playing.

Yeah it’s definitely borked.

Just tried playing a 1080P 15mbps stream on a client with download WAN speed of around 8mbps. No other streams were active at the time.

Buffered within a few seconds and there was no attempt to downgrade quality.

Started playing again for a bit, then buffered again, still attempting to play at the original 1080P resolution all the while, saying transcoding was throttled.

Transcoder isn’t the issue. If I manually limit transcoding to 4mbps on the server end- no streams buffer at all and server happily transcodes multiple streams at once (up to around 8 from experience)

As you can see, error message on client related to lack of bandwidth (not server power), and server status shows transcoding as throttled when buffering is still occuring. All screenshots show the server attempting to send a 1080P stream. It never downgrades to a lower quality to which the client can receive the stream.

All of which suggests the client doesn’t have enough bandwidth to receive the stream.

This is normally when the Server then downgrades the quality of the stream to fit with available client bandwidth.

However this is no longer happening.

Bump. Still broken

Having similar issues, however, auto quality on iOS works fine. My Samsung Tab 4 does not though, tries to play at 200mbps when enabled. Yes, two hundred, not 20. I don’t think Plex even supports that high of bit rate. Seems to be very bugged and causing a lot of overall buffering as of late.

Just tried again to play the 15mbps file on a 8mbps internet download speed.

Plex continues to try and play the 15mbps file at full quality. Never attempts to reduce quality. Just buffers.

Bump. (I’ve been advised that bumping threads until they are investigated/responded to is the correct procedure)

Bump…

Bump again…

Bump…

I’m having a similar issue. I only started using Plex about two weeks ago, used the Web-App until I bought the Android-App yesterday since I thought it would be handy. In this case, I tried watching a 1080p video in source quality (Bitrate 1753 kbps) on my tablet. No matter what setting I choose in the Android-App, global or video settings, the playpack runs for about 10 seconds before it starts to become extremely laggy because the App changes the settings to 200mbps@480p on it’s own

I tested every available quality option but it always changes back to ridiculous 200mbps which makes playback impossible.
I’m the only client on my server. The server has a 1Gbps connection, has no limits in the settings and my connection at home is 50mbps. Playback inside the browser (Android-Chrome) works flawlessly.
So right now, I’ve spent 5 bucks on an App which prevents me from watching my videos.

Bump…

Bump. Still broken.

Bump.

It seems to be broken for me as well. Just buffers rather than adjusting the quality down.

Bump again

Bump again. Will get a response one day!

Busted for me too :frowning: awesome feature, if it would actually work
