Server Version#: 1.22.2.4282 (Windows)
Player Version#: 4.55.0 (Web), 7.15 (Apple TV)
I am trying to get the “Automatically Adjust Quality” setting to work, but I cannot. No matter the bandwidth that is available, the content always begins streaming at the default quality setting set on the client, and it never moves off of that. Per the documentation, this should be changing after a minute or so (I assume there is a speed test or something happening in the background), but even after waiting 10 minutes, nothing changes.
With 10 Mbps upload available from the server and 10 Mbps available on my hotspot, the quality will sit at 720 kbps if I have that set in the client, or it will sit at 4 Mbps if I have that set, etc. As there is no buffering at 4 Mbps, I know it has the bandwidth to go higher, but it just never does (nor goes it go lower if the bandwidth starts choking it).
It appears the setting is working in some capacity as enabling it forces media to transcode which would normally play via Direct Play, and my players reference not being able to use the enhanced player because of the auto setting (which I expected), but the quality itself is just . . . never changing.
I have tested this with Live TV as well as movies on my Plex server with the same result. I have tested this with my Apple TV as well as the Web player with the same result. Are there some sort of logs that I can pull to see what is going on? This feature would be extremely helpful for my parents who are traveling the country and will have massive variation in cell signal, and I cannot tell them to change their quality settings manually after every speed test or something, but I’m sure they would like to see HD picture when they have the available bandwidth. Ideas?
Seems to be a problem with the latest update. I am having the problem where it’s forcing it to 720p and I can’t change it to original quality in the playback settings.
The quality can’t go higher than the default Remote Quality set at the client - I would assume.
Set the client’s Remote Quality to Original/The Max you’d like to see (before playback begins) - see if the behavior changes.
I recently (last 6 months or so) had occasion to see if AQ worked - and it did. I have a friend that had some UberSnot Bandwidth - “Frontier” in West Virginia. I had him set the Remote Quality to Max. I turned on AQ.
He’d start - transcoding, of course - with a decent enough picture, then Frontier would start coughing up hairballs, but AQ kept the stream going, even if it had to transcode an item to the point it made Apollo 11 Video Footage look like IMAX. It was horrific.
No buffering tho. AQ worked as intended.
He got some real internet - and I turned AQ off. I did see it work however.
If you have great bandwidth it’s very likely you’ll never see AQ work as you have no need for it… unless you need to test the transcoder. AQ will absolutely have that thing engaged.
If you’re trying to employ AQ as a work-around to setting Remote Quality manually in every Client App that connects to your server - forgettaboutit.
Spend a penny in here with a vote - we’ve been screaming about it for decades and now we’re hearing a bit of hope over the background din of crickets:
I click it and it buffers, doesn’t change and it’s still on the convert to 720p when I’ve tried it. A lot of my devices are hardwired as well so shouldn’t really have any problem
My Remote Access has been acting up as well, i’ll disable it, enable it and its green until I hit another tab then it goes into error again.
Tip: It looks like your server may be connected to the internet through multiple routers or other network devices. Try connecting it directly to your primary device, or visit our support site for more information about troubleshooting this “Double-NAT” scenario
But its just Modem—>Orbi Router—>Orbi Satellites and I havent switched anything so dunno where else to look.
