[bug] changing title automatically changes "sort title"

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6486
Player Version#: 4.87.2

Hello,

I’m used to change media titles but often I don’t want the “sort title” to be different than original.
What happens is that whenever I change title and click on save, sort title is also changed and it’s equal to title.

I don’t get why Plex should do that automatically without any consent, so I believe this is a bug.

This is not a bug.
Click on the lock icon of the sort title field before changing the title field and you won’t have that issue.

The sort title is derived from the title field, so if the title changes, the sort title will change.
This logically makes sense because if, for instance, a TV show episode doesn’t yet have a title and then it gets update in the metadata sites, you wouldn’t want the title to be “Real Episode Name” but the sort title to still be “Episode 1” for that episode.

I agree that it is an intentional feature. Whether or not it’s a good one, I’m undecided.

As it is now, though, you don’t know it’s going to happen until you click ‘Save.’ It’s a complete surprise, and this makes it look like a bug. It would be better if there was some indication that it was going to happen when you enter a new Title. Maybe, as you type the new Title, the Sort Title auto-populates with the change, but reverts to the original value when you click the lock. when you click ‘Save’ after entering the new title, a confirmation appears, explaining that the Sort Title will be changed unless you lock it (auto-populating is more headache-inducing than it’s worth).

Can you give an example of the behavior you want?

Are you referring to how words like “The” and “An” are removed from titles?

I wonder if you would prefer disabling automatic removal of ArticleStrings from Titles. This is done by default so things sort the same way they would in a real physical Library.

Thanks everyone, I didn’t know what the lock was for, now I do

And no, @Volts , not looking for articles.
