This appears to be a bug that’s been around since 2016. Can we fix it?
I’m having trouble casting desired version (resolution) to a Chromecast Ultra (4k without CCwGTV), it defaults to the 4k version, which is incompatible with my display and I don’t have enough bandwidth to play it anyway.
I want to watch the 1080p version.
Differences in casting behavior between Android app and Plex Web
In Plex Web the cast icon appears in both the explore screens and while playing content. This gives more confidence that they are casting the actual stream/version they are seeing play on their local device. But it doesn’t work anyway.
In Plex Mobile it’s only on the home screen, this makes it less certain for a user that they are casting the correct version.
Using “Watch version”/”Play version” always plays on the local device
Even when connected to a Cast device, using the “Watch version” and selecting an alternate stream starts playing it on the local device rather than on the connected display. This happens in both the Android App and Plex Web.
If you already have a stream playing on a connected Chromecast, selecting “Watch version” and selecting an alternate stream starts playing it and the Chromecast keeps playing its version.
This was already discussed in several places without a response from the Plex engineering team.
