NEW APP iOS - Watch Versions, Extras playback issue

Server Version#: 1.41.5.9522
Player Version#: 2025.13.0
Other devices: Chromecast Ultra, iPhone 12 mini (18.4), mac mini Sonoma (14.7.4)

Looking for answers to two simple questions, huge thanks to whomever can provide a straight(ish) answer:

  1. Using the new iOS app, Watch Versions and all Extras will only play back on my phone. Neither will appear (cast) on the TV. TV playback is possible, but Plex chooses the file. For example, if I have 4K and 1080p versions, Plex automatically chooses the 4K when I hit “Play”. Playback for 1080p version will only happen on my phone. Simply want to know if this isn’t working because it hasn’t been fixed yet, or if this feature will now be behind the Plex Pass paywall. Thanks.

  2. Will the latest PMS (Version 1.41.6.9685) work with the old iOS app Version 8.45?

Thanks all.

Yes, they are compatible. I keep an old iPhone 7 around and it cannot update to the new app (and is therefore still on 8.45). It still works fine with my servers, all of which are version 1.41.6.9685.

Excellent, thank you. I did the exact same with a backup 6s Plus.

Local extras and “versions” (aka duplicates) do not requires Plex Pass.

“Optimized” versions and streaming extras do require Plex Pass as they have always been.

There have been changes to how casting works but still free. What you describe sounds like a bug if I am understanding.

Hi BW, HUGE thanks for a follow-up.

Yep, I think we’re on the same page. True, I’ve never had any previous issue with casting to the TV when choosing a version or a local extra feature (i.e., behind-the-scenes), which is why I more or less assumed it was a bug.

Here are some screenshots to make sure I’m being clear about where I am in the app:

As you can see, navigating to Watch Versions and seeing the versions isn’t the issue. It simply won’t cast, and only plays back on my phone. This is also true when attempting to play an extra.

So yeah, that’s it. When this bug gets worked out, looking forward to digging into the new app. Thanks again!

Just adding that this is also happening to me. Watch Version will not playback on Chromecast after updating to the new UI, it only plays on my phone. Worked fine before the update.

Thanks for chiming in, @dsheck81.

Thanks for keeping this ball in the air, @BigWheel

I don’t want to add too many "me too"s but thought it was worth noting that I’m having the same problem and I’m also using a Chromecast Ultra with iPhone.

Server: 1.41.7.9749, iOS client: 2025.15.0 (1053)

I have plexpass and i’m willing to try to work with someone.

The option to change the transcoding is also missing from the app now (when casting, I see it and it seems to work when viewing directly in the iOS app), I’m not sure if that’s something that just hasn’t been implemented yet or a bug I’m experiencing. I have HW transcoding so typically when I want a lower quality version I can just change the quality.

I’m having the same problem. Running iOS version 2025.15.0. I typically select 1080p over 4K versions when casting to my smaller TV to avoid transcoding. This was simple and worked flawlessly in the older versions.

Still a problem in 2025.17.0

Damn, was kind of hoping it would get fixed within a few updates. I’m still on 2025.16.0 but not only am I unable to ‘Watch Version’ on anything other than my phone but now some videos are just not playing at all. They try to stream, but never actually start. I can actually see the player trying to cycle through several episodes before just giving up.

Server version 1.41.8.9834 and Android 2025.19.0 and the Watch Version feature still refuses to play on connected Chromecast. It only plays on my phone.

Worked flawlessly before the UI update. Any idea if this is on the devs radar at all?

Unclear if the devs have this on their radar, @dsheck81. Still not working for me with latest MacOs and iOS versions.

@BigWheel - any insider info on this issue?

Thanks all. We’ll get there.

Android v2025.22.0 - Server v1.42.1.10060

“Watch Version” still only plays on my phone, will not cast to connected Chromecast. Even selecting the version that players on default when using normal ‘Watch’ will not play on TV.

The bug report is in progress so it is currently being worked on but I can’t give any ETA

Thanks for the update @BigWheel. Appreciate all your work.

Another “me too”. Chromecast Ultra with 4k and 1080p content, trying to cast always chooses 4k and “Watch Version” (on android-mobile 2025.27.0 ) or “Play Version” (plex-web ) selecting 1080p always plays the content on the device, not casting it.
