[BUG]Dolby Atmos (lossless) when streaming to Android TV via LAN

Server Version#:1.19.2.2737(smb)
Player Version#:8.0.0.17276

I’m using 2019 Nvidia Shield TV Pro as the server, and MiBox S as the player in the same network.

I have about 10 MKV videos with lossless Dolby Atmos (shown in Plex as TrueHD 7.1). Whether Passthrough enabled or disabled, if I try to play any of these videos, Plex just shows the waiting circle forever without any error message.

If I switch to a different audio track of the same video, for example AC3 5.1, the problem disappears.

I tried the same videos on Plex web & Plex for Android phone, and there was no problem.

Anyone else having the same issue?

Do you have an atmos capable device for receiving the audio? It might be transcoded and causing troubles.

Seems as the server is fast enough to do the transcode…

Yes the speaker system can process it.

I don’t think my old Mi8 phone can do Dolby Atmos, but even the Android mobile version Plex can play those videos properly. So I don’t think the problem is with the server.

Does the Mi Box S support TrueHD passthrough?

I Googled “Mi Box S TrueHD” and found many reports that the box does not passthrough TrueHD or dts-HD audio. I did not see any reports of successful passthrough. This was for both Kodi and Plex.

AFAIK, the Shield is the only Plex client that will passthrough TrueHD.

Thanks for the info. Surprisingly, with VLC, my MiBox S can play TrueHD from its storage perfectly, whether passthrough disabled or enabled.

So the problem should be with Plex.

In fact, my MiBox S can play those videos from Shield TV perfectly via SMB. Can’t Plex just work like an SMB browser without any transcoding?

By the way, disabling transcoding in the server settings doesn’t help.
