[BUG] Fire TV won't play .SRT if .ASS present

Server Version#: 1.22.2.4282
Player Version#: 8.15.0.23855

There’s a bug on FireTV Player where if you have a .ass subtitle in the container you won’t be able to play any .srt. If you try to select an external .srt or download one from OpenSubtitles, the player will fall back to the track 1 of the .ass subtitles (in case you have more than one).

To reproduce the bug, just add an external .srt (from another language) next to a video file that contains .ass subtitles, and then try to play that .srt.

Android developers, the problem persists. If there’s an .ass subtitle embedded, android players won’t play any other .srt

@marekszulik Sorry for pinging you, but can you please take a look at this problem?
If you need any new evidence or details, let me know.

Hey Costa I wonder if there might be something else at play here. I have many Anime shows with embedded ASS subtitles and external SRT subtitles (as an option for compatibility reasons). I tried a few episodes just now and was able to seamlessly switch between both the embedded ASS and external SRT subs on my 4k Firestick. Any possiblity it might be a permissions issue (has definitely never happened to me before :upside_down_face:)?

Edit: Also you mentioned having multiple subs. Any chance there are 10 or more subs for that file? If so you me be experiencing the same issue as me here. Plex for Fire TV seems to be bugged at the moment regarding files with 10+ subtitles

One is a tv show and it has one .ass subs + one external .srt.
The other one is an anime with two .ass embedded and one external .srt.
I tried it on two Fire stick lite and one Fire stick 4k with two different accounts and got the same results.
I don’t know what else it could be, but the logs show that I’m trying to select a different sub with no success

Maybe the embedded ass subtitle has the “forced” flag, and the server and/or player is trying to respect that flag and ignoring the request to use another subtitle. It’s still a bug no doubt, you should be able to disable the forced sub and choose an alternate.

Hello i’m facing the same issue with plex on shield tv. Looks like 1st additional srt is considered as 1st subtitle, which is causing trouble with embedded ass

I found a workaround by duplicating my srt, it seems 2nd srt is then loading 2nd sub which is my 1st srt, so it does the job. But still this is very frustrating

Having the same problem on my shield…
I can select the srt but plex keeps playing with an embedded ASS-sub

Havin the same issue with firetv. The video plays fine on web. Can we get a transcoding option so that we can force to play the video with subtitle burn-in and strip out the original subtitle track?

This is STILL not working. Come on, it was first reported 6 months ago!

Also having the same issue on 4k firestick. No matter what I choose, the client uses the Arabic (forced). I can’t read Arabic unfortunately. Tried other clients - web, android and xbox. They all work fine. It’s just the Plex app on the firestick with the issue.

Also facing the same issue, I thought it was just my firestick or tv but tried it elsewhere and no gravy…same circumstances
