[BUG] No playback controls & subtitles appear burnt when resolution switching is enabled

9.11.0.36352 (bf91d093) on Beta Channel through Play Store on Chromecast with Google TV

When starting playback on any TV Episode or Movie with a resolution lower than the TV’s (1080p in my case) the playback will start & the video pauses for a moment as it does.
The Chromecast Remote’s buttons (Up, Down, Left, Right, Select) do nothing. On a Harmony Hub with with a Harmony Companion remote it’s dedicated Play, Pause FastForward, & Rewind will work, but the arrow buttons do not, same as the Chromecast Remote’s.
the VTT or SRT subtitles also look different, more similar to how they look with burnt subtitles, with richer shadows but much smaller where burnt subtitles usually look bigger.

Force closing the app, restarting the Chromecast, Restarting the Plex Server App, & Restarting the Plex Server machine all did not fix the problem.

Changing the settings on the Plex App to disable Resolution Switching resolved the issue.
Connecting a different Chromecast with the non-Beta App worked without issue.
Another Chromecast with the Beta App installed had the same problem.

I noticed when testing that the TV will change resolution to that of the video if it is 720p, then back to 1080p but seems to attempt the same switch but the popup on the TV shows 1080P then 1080p again when doing 480 or 360 videos. I’m not sure if that’s related to the issue or not as I realized it after I tested the other one & put it back & cannot test it again at the moment.

Would you be able to fetch the clients logs after replicating the issue?

It’s odd that the non-beta app works as when Resolution Switching is enabled on that build on a Chromecast with Google TV playback won’t start at all.

So it looks like there might have been an update to the Chromecast software as now the other Chromecasts all have the same problem.

I noticed that it name makes more noises than it did when just scrolling through things so that was probably a UI update that may be causing the issue

I’ve got the network logging from the client turned on
I’m not sure what needs to be redacted from it

I’m not sure what exactly I need to share or how you want me to share it.

As far as the Resolution switching I have always used it. Some TVs I turn off the refresh rate switching because with it on the video starts with no audio for the first second or 2 which became annoying. The resolution switching always happened before the video started. I haven’t paid attention so if at some point it was just not doing it even though the settting was on I wouldn’t have noticed it, but within 24 hours before I opened this Bug Report I started having this problem.
It it was a result of that build having an issue with resolution switching it’s possible that my Chromecast just didn’t update until just then, I never manually update unless I have an issue & I have had an issue with another app where there was an update that didn’t get installed when it was available for days.

My videos will definitely play, just with playback controls missing

Nothing needs to be redacted as we mask things like your authentication token, if you copy it into a text file you can then send it to me, either on this thread or via DM.

So when I tested it this time to create the logs I turned on the Resolution & Refresh switching, started playback, then attempted to press all the main buttons on the remote, to no effect, then did all the actions avaialbe with the harmony remote. I did discover that if I press the FF or RR buttons, for a brief time afterwards the L/R on the arrow keys work so long as they are pressed quickly after the FF/RR. I don’t know if that helps with anything but thought it was of note.
I also noticed this time, I don’t remember if the same was true before, but when I started playback of a 720:426 video it attempted to switch resolutions not to 480, but to 720, before going back to 1080.

Your TV only supports 1280x720 or 1920x1080 this is why it’s not selecting a 480p resolution. If your curious the modes your TV is reporting are:

According to the logs the UI is being made visible, and based on what you have said about another Chromecast getting an update and then having the same issue it’s looking like the latest Chromecast with Google TV update has some problems when the resolution is switched. Will try and find a video today that uses 720x426 and see if I can replicate the problem.

If needed I can reproduce the log with a video that used a more standard resolution, that one was from an DVD of an old movie so it may not be very standard. Let me know a resolution you want & I almost certainly have at least a video of that. I definitely have some at 1280:720 & that’s one of the ones listed. I also have definitely had the problem with 720 as that’s my default resolution I rip to for animated things
