TV shows that won't play on a Chromecast with Google TV (4K)

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7775
Player Version#: 10.7.0.5286 (2a8c8a8)
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

I’m using a Chromecast with Google TV (4K), and about 100% of my films play without issue, but nearly 50% of my tv shows cause trouble.

Typically, I press play and the player seems to try to start the episode, and then about 7 seconds later the screen goes black and then returns to the TV shows library. Sometimes, after the screen goes black, the audio is playing, and then if I make it back to the Home screen and press play on the episode there, the screen switches to the episode currently in progress.

Sometimes though, no matter what I do I cannot get the episode to play.

I don’t know how else to describe it, but I’d love some advice and will share anything anyone asks for.

Thanks!

Having similar issues since November, are you playing off a remote server? Does it have transcoding turned on?

Hey, thanks for joining the conversation.

I have a server here in my home, so I’m not accessing a server shared to me. I never know if that means, because I am playing on a Plex client inside the house if I am on a “remote server”…

I do have transcoding on, yes, up all the way in every way if possible.

I’m having the same issue with my CCwGTV 4K, with the exact same behavior, although it also affects a few of my movies. It doesn’t necessarily affect all episodes of a single show. It is reproducible every time for the affected files. I can’t figure out a common codec/aspect to the media files, and I haven’t found a resolution other than redownloading a different file. The affected files play fine on the plex web app. Attempting to cast the affected media from the web/android apps fails with an error.

On playing an affected episode/movie the screen goes black for a few seconds, then switches back to the plex home screen with no error message. Occasionally the orange buffering circle appears at the corner of the screen (with an aberrant resolution) before it crashes back to the home screen. The player controls never appear so I can’t try manually forcing transcoding and I don’t know if its trying to direct play or transcode. Occasionally the audio continues to play in the background, and on reselecting play on the same show it then plays correctly.

I think we’re having the same problem, but I’m not sure how to investigate further…

I too am having this exact problem, I can work around it by setting resolution switching to off in the Plex app and it will play without a problem. But… I prefer to watch show/movies with resolution switching enabled.
